Today the Cleveland Guardians recognize and celebrate Larry Doby breaking the AL color barrier in 1947, just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson.

“Jackie had it better in one way. When he went to spring training in 1946, he had a whole year to get adjusted. I came up in the middle of the season. I was 23 years old, and I had to perform immediately.”

“Nobody showed me the ropes. There was nobody to talk to, nobody to explain what to expect. I was completely alone.”

To learn more about Larry Doby and his historic importance in Cleveland and within the league, we recommend reading this great piece at : https://www.coveringthecorner.com/a-close-examination/65397/is-it-time-for-mlb-to-recognize-larry-doby

This 4th of July, we want to spotlight the incredible Bob Feller: legendary Cleveland pitcher, and the first professional athlete to enlist in the U.S. Navy, on the day following Pearl Harbor. 🇺🇸

Baseball and the military have always been uniquely entwined. At the Baseball Hall of Fame, every veteran has their service time displayed below their plaque.

In Heritage Park at Progressive Field, Bob Feller’s plaque proudly denotes his service time.

There are also baseball cards that celebrate Feller’s bravery and military service:

2007 Topps - Distinguished Service Bob Feller (DS3) with in-person auto and HOF inscription

2022 Historic Autographs - End of the War: 1945 Bob Feller uniform relic (BF-U)
