For National Senior Games recumbent cyclist Jim DeGoey, staying active isn’t about chasing the past; it's about adapting to where you are now.
“The reality is that it is not about reliving the glory years; it’s about finding a new game plan. If you want to reignite your passion for activity, you have to look at it differently than you did in your 20s. You’ve got the opportunity now to use the wisdom of your more advanced age,” shares Jim.
Jim's movement journey has taken him from recreational runner to competitive cyclist and most recently, a recumbent cycling national champion.

At 91, Anna “Mary Ann” Hartman was the oldest competitor in last summer’s National Senior Games Archery competition. And yet, she hadn’t picked up a bow until the age of 75!
How does Anna respond to people who think 75 is too late to pick up a new activity? “When you’re 75, you gotta look for something new to do," she says. "You can’t sit around watching TV and playing on your computer all day. You gotta get out and move!”

Introducing the sport lineup for the 2027 National Senior Games! Over 25 sports will be offered for athletes ages 50 and over when the event is held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from June 30 to July 11, 2027.
Whether you thrive on adrenaline or prefer a strategic challenge, there’s a sport for every interest. New sports for 2027 include Bocce, Climbing and Flag Football. Two additional sports are expected to be announced in early 2026.

Jim DeGoey became a competitive cyclist in his 50s and pursued the sport with dogged determination. That resolve was tested when, five years ago, Jim was hit while on a training ride.
The injuries and surgeries that followed left him with 15 fused vertebrae and new physical limitations. Grateful that he could still move and determined to get back on the bike, Jim found a new path forward through recumbent cycling.
“I started training in May 2022, and I’ve already logged 1,166 training sessions and almost 19,000 miles on it,” Jim says. "It’s a part of my life.”
At the National Senior Games last year, Jim achieved his long-held goal of winning a national championship when he took gold in the Men’s 75-79 10K Recumbent Time Trial.
