LEXINGTON, MONMOUTH-ROSEVILLE, PONTIAC NET HOME WINS

Lexington, Monmouth-Roseville and Pontiac each scored home court victories in volleyball action on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Lexington-Ridgeview
LEXINGTON — The Minutemen handled Ridgeview in two sets in a Heart of Illinois Conference matchup of co-op partners. Lexington cruised 25-21, 25-8 at The Fort.

Jaclyn Grunloh and Tinleigh Miller were the top attackers for the Minutemen (5-4-2). Grunloh had 7 kills while Miller delivered 6 kills. Gracie Stutzman had 15 assists while serving up 9 points. Miller had 8 points from behind the line and Lynnley Fraher served up 6.

Grunloh and Stutzman each 1 block on defense. Brenna Stover dug up 9 attacks while Miller and Fraher each had 6 digs.

Lexington won the junior varsity match 25-11, 25-19.

Monmouth-Roseville-Sherrard
MONMOUTH — The Titans got Prime Beef Festival Week off on the right foot with a three-set win over Sherrard in TRAC play at The Shoebox. Monmouth-Roseville spotted the Tigers the first set before rallying for a 25-27, 25-18, 25-15 triumph.

The Titans are now 5-4 on the season.

PTHS-Ottawa
PONTIAC — The Indians also needed three sets to protect the home floor against the Pirates of Ottawa. Pontiac won the match 2-1.

The Indians will take an 8-2 record into action on Thursday when they host rival Prairie Central.

PRAIRIE CENTRAL DROPS VB MATCH TO TRI-VALLEY

FAIRBURY — Prairie Central battled but the rallies seemed to favor visiting Tri-Valley as the Heart of Illinois Conference power left town with a two-set volleyball victory Monday night.

“The score does not show the true feel of the game,” PC head coach Kirsten Smith said. “The game was a lot of back and forth volleyball with saves and plays on both sides of the net. It just didn’t end in our favor with us losing a couple points each rotation and coming back with one or two.”

The Vikings prevailed 25-16, 25-18 in completing a sweep of the evening’s set. Tri-Valley also claimed the freshman and sophomore matches.

Miranda Hari led the Prairie Central (6-4) attackers with 9 kills and Mia Elliott chalked up 5 kills. Maggie Fehr collected 18 assists. Fehr also had 11 digs on defense.

The Hawks will take to the road for its next match as they take on rival Pontiac on the Indians’ home floor on Thursday.

INDIANS CHALK UP CAMPAIGN’S FIRST VICTORY

PONTIAC — Except for some ill-timed penalties, Pontiac margin of victory might been greater Friday night. As it was, the Indians and their fans were happy as can be with a 36-20 drubbing of Paxton-Buckley-Loda at Williamson Field.

The Indians had two touchdowns called back in the first quarter and were whistled for 13 penalties for 127 yards for the game.

Although the Tribe eventually scored on its opening drive, it would have saved time and maybe allowed for another possession without the fist penalty. Jayden Reed, who ripped off some big runs on the night, took his first carry to the house. But the 69-yard jaunt was called back for a holding infraction. The Tribe eventually scored on the drive when Corban Dyck connected with Amazin King for a 6-yard score.Dyck ran in the conversion for an 8-0 lead with 5:57 to go in the first period.

The second TD called back was a Dyck-to-King play that would have covered 62 yards if not for an illegal block that brought it back. The Dyck-to-King connection prevailed three plays later for a 48-yard score and a 14-0 lead with 32 seconds left in the opening lap.

Big plays were a theme in this Illini Prairie Conference tilt. PBL got on the board on a 67-yard play early in the second quarter, making it 14-6, which is where it stood at the intermission.

Reed raced 76 yards on the first play from scrimmage in the second half to give PTHS a 20-6 lead. Cesar Gutierrez then went the distance on a second-down play on the Tribe’s next possession.

Gutierrez raced 64 yards for the touchdown with 8:37 left in the third. Dyck ran in the conversion for a 28-6 Pontiac lead.

PBL’s second score was a 45-yard run from quarterback Sam Hall, but Pontiac answered on the third play of its next possession.

A huge return set the Indians up at the PBL 17. Dyck recovered his own fumble on second down before Reed ran 23 yards for the Tribes’ final TD. Dyck hit Gutierrez for the conversion and a 36-12 advantage with 57 seconds left in the third period.

PBL’s final tally came with 1:29 remaining in the game.

The Indians (1-2) finished with 365 yards of total offense. Despite the big runs, Reed finished with 106 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Gutierrez had 93 yards and a TD while Ben Melchers had 46 yards as PTHS collected 244 yards on the ground. Dyck was 9 of 14 throwing for 121 yards and two touchdowns. King had five catches for 74 yards and a TD. Melchers added 22 yards on two catches and Gutierrez one reception for 22 yards.

Pontiac will be looking at winning two in row on Sept. 11 at Illinois Valley Central. The Tribe last won two in a row in 2019 with wins over St. Thomas More and Rantoul to close out that season.

EL PASO-GRIDLEY, DWIGHT TRIUMPH; PC FALLS AT HOME

El Paso-Gridley remained unbeaten while Dwight won for the second straight week. On the dark side, Prairie Central fell short in Bingo Magic Sports-area football from Sept. 4.

EL PASO — It was Adams on land and Adams through the air to lead El Paso-Gridley to a 43-0 Heart of Central Illinois Conference (Large) victory over Ridgeview-Lexington.

Aaden Adams rushed just five times for 39 yards, but two of those totes took the ball to the end zone. His scoring runs went for 11 yards with 2:02 to go in the first quarter, making it 14-0 after Elliott Toth’s point-after kick, and 23 yards with 8:01 remaining in the first half. Again, Toth was good on his PAT to make it 28-0. He hit all five of his attempts.

Owen Adams piloted the EPG air attack, hitting on 10 of 14 passes for 229 yards and four TDs. He also had a successful two-point conversion toss.

Quarterback Adams’ four touchdowns went to four different receivers. Cha’von Maxon went 41 yards with an Adams toss for the first points of game for a 7-0 lead just 50 seconds into the contest. Braden Gibson went 46 yards with an Adams pass that made it 21-0 in the second period.

Jayvion Maxon hauled in an Adams pass for a 51-yard score with 2:47 remaining in the first half. Maxon had three catches for 95 yards.

Braden Hayes scored the final TD when he collected an Adams offering for a 15-yard score. Adams then hit Gibson for the final margin of victory.

The EPG defense was solid as the Mustangs managed just 53 yards of offense. Ayden Weber led Ridgeview-Lexington with 28 yards on 22 carries. Micah Wiltz was 2 of 4 throwing for 21 yards.

EPG (3-0) will travel west a few miles to meet rival Eureka (2-1) on Sept. 11. R-L will host Clinton in a battle of 0-3 teams.

St. Teresa 21, Prairie Central 19
FAIRBURY — Prairie Central owned the time of possession and collected more yardage than its guest, but St. Teresa Ade two more conversions than the Hawks to leave town with a 21-19 victory.

Prairie Central held a 19-14 edge at the intermission. Quarterback Collin Kilgus ran in an 8-yard keeper and AJ Basham added the conversion kick for a 7-0 lead with 4:27 to go in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs scored 35 seconds into the second period to tie the game, but Spencer Ray found the end zone with 7:09 to go in the half to give the Hawks a 13-7 advantage after the conversion try failed. Moments later, St. Teresa had a 14-13 lead. The 51-yard pass play came just 18 seconds later.

Prairie Central led 19-14 at the intermission after Kilgus ran in a keeper from seven yards wth 14 seconds to go in the period. Again, the conversion try failed.

A 20-yard run from Luke Rhodes put the Bulldogs ahead for good with 9:20 to go in the third quarter.

Basham rushed for 109 yards on seven carries and Kilgus had 93 yards and two touchdowns on 14 trips to lead the Prairie Central (1-2) offense. Kinser Benjamin added 44 yard and Kole steidinger rushed for 39. The Hawks had 310 yards on the ground and went 0-for-3 throwing. PC had the ball for 28 minutes, 47 seconds and outgunned St. Teresa (3-0) 310-281.

The Hawks will travel to Paxton for an IPC contest against PBL on Sept. 11.

Dwight 44, Dee-Mack 12
MACKINAW — Dwight scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to take control of its nonconference game at Deer Creek-Mackinaw. The trio of TDs propelled the Trojans to a 44-12 victory.

Despite leading 8-0 entering the second quarter, DTHS got off to a slow start as the Chiefs reached the end zone. The conversion failed, leaving the Trojans up 8-6.

Dwight’s response was a Colin Bachand keeper for 37 yards and a 14-6 lead. Ayden Collum scored for the second time in the game when he reached pay dirt on a 6-yard carry Collum added the two-point conversion run.

Dee-Mack tallied its second score on a 43-yard pass play, cutting the margin to 22-12. Dwight responded when Bachand connected with Joe Duffy for a 51-yard score. Duffy added the conversion for a 30-12 halftime lead.

Kayden Wood found the end zone with a 37-yard run in the third period. Bachand added the two-point conversion to make it 38-12. Ryker Anderson had a 3-jaunt in the fourth quarter for the final difference.

Collum rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. He got the Trojans (2-1) on the board in the opening frame with a 3-yard run. Duffy, who added the two-point conversion on the first TD, collected 76 rushing yards and 101 receiving yards and a TD. Anderson rushed for 56 yards while Wood had 41.

Bachand rushed for 42 yards to go with his 4 of 8 passing for 109 yards and a TD.

Dwight (2-1) will host unbeaten Fithian (Oakwood) (3-0) on Sept. 11.

MONTROY POWERS TITANS PAST GOLDEN EAGLES

ALEDO — Compared to recent history, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans found themselves in unfamiliar territory compared just two weeks into the 2026 football season. Sitting at 0-2 and looking for a reset, the Titans got their chance in Aledo in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference crossover matchup with the Golden Eagles.

While the kickoff was pushed back a half hour and both sides of players were visibly battling through the scorching hot conditions outside, Monmouth-Roseville was able to come out on top for a 26-14 victory.

The Titans entered the game sitting 0-2 after having dropped back-to-back games for the first time since the midway point of the 2023 season.

The opening quarter was full of offensive fireworks on both sides, as Mercer County needed just three plays on its opening drive before sophomore fullback Eli Boswell ripped off a 36-yard touchdown to get the scoring started.

The Titans offense didn’t need much time either as their first drive took just a few minutes to end. Landon Montroy capped the drive by punching it in from 4 yards out, then adding a 2-point conversion for an 8-6 M-R lead with eight minutes to play in the quarter.

The Golden Eagles kept the ball on the ground on their ensuing drive, and they didn’t meet much resistance as they glided down the field and scored on a 3-yard run from Logan Schreurs.

Monmouth-Roseville got the last say in a back-and-forth first quarter, as a pass interference on a third-down play continued the drive. Montroy reached pay dirt again to cap the drive, this time from 36 yards out, to bring the score back to even at 14-14.

In a stark contrast from the first quarter, the second and third periods saw both defenses show up.

After a Mercer County punt, the Titans drove into Eagles territory as Kaden Russell continued the drive with a fourth-down run. Unfortunately for M-R, the drive ended on its next try at a fourth down conversion.

Mercer County had a late drive down the field with a chance to take back the lead, but Monmouth-Roseville got the stop to end the first half with the game knotted at 14–14.

The Titans opened the second half with fantastic field position, but their opening possession of the half would ended with an interception. Later, the Golden Eagles drove to inside the M-R 20 yard line, but multiple penalties pushed them back. Mercer County kicker Cannon Link’s 45-yard field goal attempt fell just short.

The Titans next drive took the game into the fourth quarter with the score still deadlocked at 14. But then the M-R offense got clicking.

Monmouth-Roseville found the end zone when Montroy tallied his third touchdown of the game, this time on a 21-yard scamper.

Mercer County tried to answer, driving all the way inside the Titans’ 15. But on a pivotal fourth down from the 11, Link’s pass to the end zone was ruled incomplete after official deliberation, giving Monmouth-Roseville the ball back.

Montroy delivered the back breaker on M-R’s first play by ripping off an 89-yard touchdown to put the Titans up 26-14.

Lars Bergren picked off a Mercer County pass and the Titans ran down the final two minutes to officially get in the win column for the first time this season.

Montroy stole the show by notching 210 yards and 4 touchdowns on 18 carries for Monmouth-Roseville (1-2). Bergren also tallied up 62 yards on 18 carries, while backup quarterback Keegan Smith, filling in for the banged up starter Kane Johnson, completed 4 of his 7 attempts for 25 yards.

The Titans will move on to a big game next Friday night, welcoming in the Princeton Tigers to Coach Dobry Field.

Pontiac notched its first win of the season with a 36-20 decision over PBL Friday night. Corban Dyck threw touchdown strikes to Amazin King. Jayden Reed rushed for 103 yards and Cesar Gutierrez ran for 96.

Bingo Magic Sports has learned that Prairie Central’s game with St. Teresa, and El Paso-Gridley’s contest against Ridgeview-Lexington have been moved back one hour. Both are now scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff. As of this posting, Pontiac’s game with PBL is still set for 7 p.m. No other information has been provided regarding Dwight’s game and Monmouth-Roseville’s game.

LEXINGTON, PONTIAC, M-R FALL WHILE DWIGHT AND EPG TRIUMPH

It was a tough night for 60 percent of the Bingo Magic Sports area teams as three suffered losses. However, the remaining 40 percent — El Paso-Gridley and Dwight — came away with victories on the volleyball court Thursday, Sept. 3.

Lexington-Tremont
TREMONT — Lexington found the road a tough place to play as the Minutemen suffered a 25-12, 25-17 loss to host Tremont.

Lexington, who plays quite a few underclassmen, tried to hold its own but found it difficult against Turks’ defense. Tinleigh Miller had 4 kills for the Minutemen while Jaclyn Grunloh and Lynnley Fraher each had 3 kills. Gracie Stutzman had 12 assists. Kamryn Deters led the servers with 3 points, including the team’s lone ace. Stutzman and Miller each had 2 points.

The Minutemen made some plays on defense. Brenna Stover came up with 9 digs while Stutzman had 6 and Miller dug up 5 attacks. Fraher and Jaelyn Melton each had 1 block.

Lexington fell to 4-4-2 and 0-1 in Heart of Illinois Conference play. Tremont improved to 7-2 with its sixth straight home win. Tremont won the junior varsity match 25-21, 25-14 and the two programs split the freshman match with Lexington winning 25-23 after losing 28-30 in a hotly contested battle.

Pontiac-LaSalle-Peru
LASALLE — After winning its first seven matches, including taking the Livingston County Invitational last weekend, Pontiac has suffered two straight losses. The second came Thursday against host LaSalle-Peru. The Cavaliers won 25-18, 25-14.

EPG-GCMS
EL PASO — El Paso-Gridley opened up Heart of Illinois Conference play with a 25-14, 27-25 victory over Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley at the Titan Center. The win moves the Titans to 6-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play. GCMS fell to 2-4.

Monmouth-Roseville-Orion
MONMOUTH — A two-set loss to Orion has dropped Monmouth-Roseville to 4-4 on the season and 0-1in Three Rivers Athletic Conference play.

The Titans were handed a 25-11, 25-17 setback by the Chargers, who improved to 6-3.

Dwight-Lowpoint-Washburn
DWIGHT — The final result made it look like host Dwight had an easy go of it in its Tri-County Conference match with Lowpoint-Washburn.

The Trojans prevailed 25-17, 25-10 to move to 1-0 in league play and 5-6 overall.
