Question of the Week: "How do I explain speech therapy to my child?"

Keep it simple and positive! ๐Ÿ’š

Try saying:
"Speech therapy is a special place where you'll play games, read books, and have fun while practicing talking, listening, and communicating. Your speech therapist is there to help you learn and grow!"

Counseling Corner - โ€œ5 Essentials in Therapyโ€

Here are some important Essentials in Therapy: Which one matters most to you?

08/19/2026

Children develop at different rates, but there are a few gentle signs families often notice when it may be helpful to check in:

โ€ข Your child seems frustrated when trying to communicate
โ€ข Speech is hard for others to understand
โ€ข Words or sentences arenโ€™t growing over time
โ€ข Following directions feels challenging
โ€ข Your child talks less than peers or avoids speaking

Another helpful question to ask yourself is:

โ€œCan people outside our home understand my child?โ€

If communication works mostly at home but not in other settings, thatโ€™s a common reason families reach out.

We adjust strategies, goals, or frequency. Progress can take time, but we problem-solve together. Sometimes children need a different approach, more repetition, or more support at home to see growth. We also look at the whole child-attention, motivation, and learning style, to make sure therapy is the right fit and as effective as possible.
