His name was Sgt. Stubby.

Pit bull mix. WWI. Eighteen months in Europe. Seventeen battles.

He sniffed out German spies. Located wounded servicemen. Earned the admiration of presidents and politicians alike.

He died in 1926 and was preserved for permanent display at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Some dogs just work. No fanfare. No hesitation. Just purpose.

The blade that carries his name is built the same way.

The Stubby is utilitarian — sturdy, capable, and built for hard use. D2 steel and textured G10 scales handle tough jobs without complaint. At 3” blade length and 7.25” overall, it disappears into a toolbox, backpack, glovebox, or waistband until you need it.

It doesn’t ask for recognition either. It just works.

Her name was Lucca.

German Shepherd. Belgian Malinois. United States Marine Corps.

Six years of service. Two deployments to Iraq. One to Afghanistan. Over 400 missions detecting explosives.

Not a single human fatality on her watch.
In 2012, an IED blast in Afghanistan cost her a front leg. She recovered, retired, and went home with her handler, Gunnery Sergeant Chris Willingham.

In 2016, she was awarded the Dickin Medal. The animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. The first U.S. Marine Corps dog ever to receive it.

She also received an unofficial Purple Heart, presented by a two-time Marine recipient of the award.

Lucca is interred at the Michigan War Dog Memorial in South Lyon, Michigan.

Some names deserve to be carried forward.
