A 100% wild tiger trout pulled from a Western North Carolina mountain stream.

Every now and then, the mountains hand you something you weren’t expecting.

Those wild, maze-like markings are unreal up close. Definitely not a trout you run into every day.
Have you ever caught a wild tiger trout in WNC? Let's see em!

103 genetically distinct cutthroat trout. One very narrow window to save them.

On July 15, an 11-person Colorado Parks and Wildlife crew hiked into the active Gold Mountain Fire zone near Ouray, Colorado, to rescue a population of genetically distinct Uncompahgre cutthroat trout from Nate Creek. This population of cutthroat carries unique genetics found nowhere else.

The crew moved 103 native trout out of the drainage before monsoon rains could potentially wash ash and debris into the stream.

The fish were transported to a quarantined unit at Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery, but biologists didn’t remove the entire population. Roughly two-thirds were intentionally left in Nate Creek in hopes the stream remains healthy enough for them to survive and naturally rebuild.

Protect part of the population. Leave part of it wild. Give both a chance to survive.

👇 I’ll drop the full story in the comments.

Staring at hundreds of flies in the bins leads to second guessing. Second guessing on the water means less fish and more stress.

Learn which basic flies catch fish anywhere, how and when to fish them, and you suddenly find your stress level decreases and your catch rate increases.

Learn the secret to selecting the staples in our latest article. Check the comments for the link and let us know what your go to fly patterns are.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live as a brook trout? Yea neither have I. But now you can play a game about it!

Brookie Rush is a free, fast-paced browser game where you start as an alevin and try to survive long enough to reach adulthood. Eat bugs, grow bigger, dodge hooks and predators, and see how high you can climb on the leaderboard.

Perfect for when you’re taking a “break” at work. Free to play. No account needed.

This is the first public playtest, and I’d genuinely appreciate your honest feedback. If you find bugs (not the kind you eat), glitches, sound problems, or anything else that feels off, let me know. Mobile and desktop feedback are both useful.

Here's what to expect as you head out fishing across WNC this week.

Three of four WNC gauges opened below their August 3 medians, and the Davidson was already 68.2°F at 7:30 Monday morning. The cleanest window is early, before daily storm chances build.

Start with ants, beetles, Golden Stone patterns, Light Cahills, and Midges. Fish shaded water, move quietly, and check the gauge again after every storm. The Nantahala has a scheduled recreation release Friday, followed by the West Fork Tuckasegee on Saturday.

Delayed Harvest waters remain under harvest regulations through September 30. Verify current regulations at ncwildlife.org before fishing.

Trout or char? The spots can point you in the right direction.

Trout, including brown and rainbow trout, usually have darker spots on a lighter body. Char typically have lighter spots on a darker body.

That is why brook trout look so different. Despite the name, brook trout are actually char (I'm sure everyone is aware at this point).

This is a useful field cue, but it is not a universal rule. Use the fish’s full marking pattern, body shape, and fins to confirm the identification.

We break down the differences in our complete trout-versus-char guide (I’ll add the link in the first comment).

Save this and share it with a fishing buddy who corrects you every time you say "brook trout".

Sold out in June and stayed that way most of the summer. The Essentials Fly Box is back on the shelf.

82 hand-tied flies. Prince Nymphs, Rainbow Warriors, Elk Hair Caddis, and the rest of what actually earns a slot in a box on WNC water.

July or August may be an odd time to restock a trout box, but the high country is still fishing good and October gets here faster than you think. This is the stretch where you quietly fill the gaps from all the flies you lost in spring and show up in the fall with a box that's ready to fish.

$67.99 through August 31 with code HOPPER15. Well under $1 per fly and ships free.
