Our Hero Haven “Hero of the Night” this week is Sergeant Jason Everly.

Jason Everly answered the call to serve our nation immediately after graduating from high school, enlisting in the United States Army in 2003 at the age of 18.

He completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he became a Military Police Soldier. Upon graduation, Jason remained stationed at Fort Leonard Wood before deploying to Iraq in 2005.

While assigned to Camp Taji, Iraq, Jason's primary mission was recruiting and training Iraqi police forces while conducting combat operations in a dangerous and hostile environment. During one engagement with enemy forces, his chain of command recommended him for the Purple Heart after he was injured in combat. Although the award was ultimately not approved, his willingness to place himself in harm's way in service to his fellow Soldiers and our nation speaks to his courage and dedication.

Following his deployment, Jason returned to Fort Leonard Wood, where he resumed military police operations and continued training Soldiers.

In 2007, Jason attended Military Working Dog Handler School at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. His hard work and dedication earned him the distinction of Top Dog, graduating at the top of his class.

Following graduation, Jason was assigned to Wiesbaden, Germany, where he served as both a Military Police Officer and K-9 handler.

In 2008, Jason deployed to Iraq for a second time, this time operating from Kirkuk. Once again, his mission focused on recruiting and training Iraqi police forces. During this deployment, Jason sustained an injury that required him to be medically evacuated back to Germany, where he underwent surgery to repair his right elbow.

As a result of his service-connected injuries, Jason was medically retired from the United States Army in December 2010 after seven years of honorable service.

Returning home to Knoxville, Iowa, Jason continued serving his community as a firefighter with the Knoxville Fire Department from 2011 to 2012. He later stepped away from the department to focus on raising his son as a single father.

Determined to continue building a future, Jason attended Ashford University, earning a bachelor's degree in Business Management in 2012.

Away from work, Jason has always been passionate about sprint car racing. What began as a dream of working on a race team became a reality through opportunities with Brian Paulus, John Anderson, and Chase Wanner before joining Carson McCarl's race team in 2018. Today, Jason continues to be a valued member of Carson McCarl's crew and says he has had a blast learning from Carson and the entire McCarl family.

In January 2025, Jason married his wife, Jesse. Together they are raising four boys—Caleb, Dakota, Paxton, and Re*****on. When he isn't at the racetrack or with his family, Jason enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time outdoors. He also remains committed to supporting fellow veterans whenever he has the opportunity.

Jason's life is a testament to resilience, perseverance, and service. Whether serving our nation overseas, protecting his community, raising his family, or giving back to fellow veterans, he continues to embody the values Hero Haven is proud to recognize.
