Most people gather friends who make them feel comfortable.
A few are fortunate enough to find someone different.
Someone who cares more about who you become than whether you like them today.
That person is rare.
And if you find one, you will spend the rest of your life grateful.
This week on Sensei's Corner.

Happy Father's Day.
To the dads who show up through the early mornings, the long weeks, and every session in between. Your kids are watching how you handle challenges. That is the lesson.
Today we celebrate the example you set on the mat and at home.

A coach should not become the center of someone’s identity.
Their role is to help people build tools, habits, and confidence they can use independently.
Real growth creates stability beyond the environment where it started.

The first match, Emilio looked like he was somewhere else, tight, trapped in his own head.
By the second and third, something shifted. He didn’t look more intense.
He looked present.
What changed wasn’t his technique. It was his attention.
“Detach yourself from the space. Enjoy what’s happening right now. The outcome doesn’t matter. Just focus on getting past this match to the next.”
That’s not just a competition tool. That’s a life tool.
Pressure shrinks the moment you stop performing for the result and start solving what’s directly in front of you.
Be present.

Tyler almost didn’t walk in.
His friend kept pushing for a month, same message every time, just come and show up.
Most people are one stubborn friend away from something they would have missed.
If you’re the one being asked, stop overthinking it. Just go.

You will not always feel motivated.
That’s why the environment around you matters so much.
Being part of a place where people notice your effort, expect your presence, and support your growth creates a deeper level of accountability.
Consistency grows stronger in community.

The best 12 year old in the room rarely becomes the best 20 year old.
Talent is loud. Habits are quiet.
The athlete who lasts is the one who kept coming back.
Who stayed coachable. Who trusted the process.
What if you stopped counting wins and started counting the days they came back?

The goal is not to make everything easy.
The goal is to make kids feel supported enough to keep trying.
With clear guidance and encouragement, confusion turns into confidence.
That is what helps them stay with it.

Some moments don’t need to be measured.
They just need to be witnessed.
This weekend was one of those moments.
Every athlete stepped onto the mats and represented something bigger than themselves, effort, discipline, and the willingness to be tested.
Regardless of outcomes, what matters most is what was built in the process.
Who they became in the pursuit of something difficult.
That’s the real work.
That's process over outcome.
Still, we want to recognize a few standout performances:
Professor Windson took 3rd in the Super Heavy Division 🥉
Professor Felipe took 3rd in the Open Class 🥉
Proud of everyone who competed, supported, and showed up fully.
This is what it means to do the work, together.
It takes a village.
And the village keeps growing.
