One of the most important things I tell my older clients is this: getting older and becoming helpless are not the same thing.
I had the opportunity to speak at Fayette Senior Services recently on “The Independence Formula: How to Stay Strong, Sharp, and Self-Sufficient for Life.”
We talked about what the research tells us about strength, balance, movement, brain health, social connection, fall prevention, and—most importantly—the things we can do now to preserve our independence later in life.
One of the studies I shared still amazes me: frail nursing-home residents with an average age of 87 participated in progressive resistance training and increased their strength by 113% in just 10 weeks.
The message: You are not automatically “too old.” The human body remains remarkably trainable.
I’m sharing the full presentation (link below) because I think this information can help people well beyond the room where I presented it.
If you have a parent, grandparent, older neighbor, friend, caregiver, someone living with a disability, or someone in an assisted-living or senior community who could benefit from this wellness lesson, please share the video with them.
Even if one person watches it and decides to start getting stronger, work on their balance, walk a little more, or become more intentional about protecting their independence, sharing it was worthwhile.
We can’t control everything about how we age—but we can control more than we sometimes realize.
