Don't Give Up on a Technique the First Time You Try It!

I think there's a lot keyboard warriors out there who don't understand the point of martial arts generally, and certainly aren't qualified to tell you what would or wouldn't work in any given context. Most advanced martial artists/fighters don't spend much time getting bogged down on theoretical conversations with strangers on the internet (we're busy training), so you're probably listening to someone whose been at it for a few months who feels like they have something to prove. In fact, they may not have any experience at all if you go looking in the comment sections on YouTube.

In the beginning, basic techniques get the job done, and doing those techniques really well is where a lot of your victories will lie. But for folks who have been practicing a long time, sometimes you just want to do something different, or push yourself to the next level with your timing...maybe learn to deal with a situation you've never faced before in standard sparring.

Advanced techniques have all kinds of reasons for being, and outside the twenty hit combos where you unrealistically expect a person to just stand there while you hit them, or the magic super qi punch, many of them have a reason for being.

Not every technique is going to work the first time you try it. And I would argue part of what's interesting about being a martial artist is getting advanced and asymmetric techniques to work. They come in handy when you spend time on them--it's useful to understand something only a few have tried and done well.

Most people can master the timing for basics. But hopefully if you're a long term practitioner, you still like to push yourself and try new things. It's good to reach out of your comfort zone and try and understand what other martial arts styles might have to offer, or go back to that thing you overlooked earlier, even if it's not in your wheelhouse.

The Lost Martial Arts Journey — The Myth: The Story That Brings Everything Together 🐉

Something I believe has been lost to our culture of efficiency is the training arc — the hero's journey.
Practicing martial arts isn't just learning to fight. It's the creation of myth.
When I was studying philosophy in college I learned that people either view their lives episodically — being one person for one part of it, then a completely different person for another — or narratively: you are essentially the same character throughout.
I have no idea what it would be like to be an episodic person, but I know as a narrative person just how important myth is. A myth is not a lie — it is a unifier. A way of making sense of our experiences and becoming whole.
I practice myth as a writer, and martial arts is one of those rare places where you can actually live your own myth. The training arc, the marked improvement in capability — physically, mentally, and technically — in my own training and life has been real. For some of us, myth is simply how we experience and engage with the world.
One can feel like the hero of their own story, and that feeling is amplified in the community as you train with other heroes.
It is okay to enjoy this and engage with it. More than okay — such a lens can only enhance your adherence to the practice. And make no mistake: your practice is improving your capability in an actual martial art. That cannot be denied. You experience it every time you can do one more pushup than before, every time your sparring starts feeling more like the Matrix than flailing, when things that used to get you out of breath simply don't anymore.
To replace the training arc with simple brutality and "realism" is the death of the art in martial arts — and for the narrative person, there is nothing that will make them quit training faster.
I have said it many times, but I'll say it again: the best type of training is the kind that you do. So indulge a little. Play the heroic music. Applaud yourself for your advancements. Enjoy the journey.
For those people who need to hear this — viewing your martial path as a hero's journey isn't a weakness. It is a strength.

This was a mistake that I let plague me for years, to impress people I didn't care about in a way that didn't make any sense for what I was trying to achieve. Whether it was for marketing purposes, or whether I felt the naysayers were right in some way...I let other people determine what I should do with my own art and passion.

But I've learned a lot in my thirties. I learned I had ADHD, and that the society I live in is--more often than not-- at odds about what matters. Most importantly, though, I realized that I didn't have to care.

I wasn't doing any of this money or fame. I was doing this for mastery of an art the fulfilled me, and to help people in my community.

In my forties, I will put more energy into what I care about and far less into things I'm trying to fight. I guess there's something martially poetic about that too. They say traditionally that Kung Fu fighters migrate more towards Tai Chi as they get older.

I used to think that's because they need gentler exercise and more recovery time. But I think far more than that, there is a mastery and spiritual component that drives that more than anything.

It's all Kung Fu to me at the end of the day, but the style of my own thinking has shifted.
