July is almost here and with it the start of the 2026 Practice Season and 𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫🔥. Our bodies are well-equipped to train and race in the heat, but we need to properly acclimate. You can help your athletes prepare for warm-weather practices now. Here are a few tips:
• Ensure your athlete is ramping up daily water intake 𝐧𝐨𝐰. Good hydration is a daily habit. Water is best pre-practice, but sports-specific electrolyte drinks are best during and after training. Each rider will need to have at least two full water bottles for every practice. • Get your rider outside 𝐧𝐨𝐰. It’s tempting to stay inside when the weather is hot🥵. But getting your athlete outside each day for 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity (ideally on their bike!) will help them acclimatize more quickly to training in the heat
• Help your rider show up to hot-weather practices with a positive mental attitude. There’s no doubt that practicing in hot weather is challenging for athletes and coaches. But one of our core goals is to build perseverance and grit in all our riders. Attitude affects both the will to perform and the level of performance. Encourage your rider to maintain a positive mental attitude 😎 when training gets hard.
We follow Georgia Cycling Association protocols for hot weather practice that include mandatory breaks and shortened practice periods if the heat index climbs above certain thresholds. We also have coaches who are trained to recognize and respond to symptoms of heat-related stress. We’ll take good care of your riders this summer, helping them to acclimate, train, and perform in the hot weather, and you can help! See less
