Mária Takács (HUN, 67.5 kg) 🇭🇺 Split Sn**ching 87.5 kg (192 lb) en route to taking 2nd at the 1989 Women’s World Championships in Manchester.

Don’t really see Split Sn**ches at the World Championships anymore (though didn’t one Swedish lifter split sn**ch at worlds 6-7 years ago?). History has shown that Squat Sn**ching is the most viable style (and no, CrossFitters didn’t invent the term!)

Mária competed in the 1st Women’s Worlds in 1989, medalling in every worlds from 1989 to 1998. If our data is correct, she has earned more medals at the World Championships than any other woman.

How many athletes have you seen Split Sn**ch or Clean in person? And where is our Hungarian following at??

Paul Anderson 🇺🇸 presses 182.5 kg (402.5 lb) at the USA vs. USSR Weightlifting competition in Moscow, Russia (1955)

The US Team traveled to Russia for the first time during the Cold War to compete. The Clean & Press world record at the time was 172.5 kg (380 lb).

To quote narrator Bud Palmer:
“The Russians snickered as Anderson gripped the bar, which was set at 402.5 pounds, an unheard-of lift.

But their snickers quickly changed to awe and all-out cheers as up went the bar and Anderson lifted the heaviest weight overhead of any human in history.”

She sets a world record Sn**ch on a 20 kg bar!

This happened in 1991 at the World Cup Gala, which served as an Olympic Test event for Barcelona. 52 kg lifter .b.goad was invited to compete, oh and there’s her coach .

On her 2nd Sn**ch attempt, John called for a new world record of 81 kg to be loaded on the bar.
Robin fought for it, and set the 52 kg Senior World Record in the Sn**ch.

Note at the time, Men and Women were both competing with the same 20 kg bar; women were not competing with the 15 kg bar until it was introduced at the 1995 World Championships.

Unfortunately women in Weightlifting didn’t get to compete at the Olympics until 2000, which Robin went on to compete in. In terms of medals on the Senior world stage, Robin Goad is the most decorated American woman in history.

Overhead Squatting with Chains?!
ft. 🇯🇵

A few weeks ago I happened to be training on a platform next to Miyamoto Masanori. I look over and he’s overhead squatting with chains.

I was a bit confused, so I asked head coach Toshihiro Miyake what the purpose of this was?

Miyake-san said that this was to improve his balance and stability, since the chains will want to swing and move the bar out of position.

I’m not familiar with the efficacy of suspending weights off a bar to improve stability, but just from watching Miyamoto-san, I did think it forced him to be more controlled and particular about how he moved.

I’m in no way saying an athlete should or shouldn’t do these, I’m just fascinated when I see how differently some of the best lifters in the world train, some using more unorthodox methods than others.

Miyamoto-san is the 4th best 73 kg in the world, so he’s surely doing a lot right!
From March 2024

If there’s one takeaway from this post, it’s this: The best in the world don’t all train the same; there is more than one path to success!

And please don’t start doing an unorthodox exercise just because an Instagram account posts it; understand the purpose and ex*****on, and after that determine if it makes sense to use it, or if your time would be better spent doing something else.
