One and a half weeks into the school year, the new routines are slowly falling into place. Earlier mornings, packed calendars, and the occasional โ€œI forgot to tell youโ€ฆโ€ five minutes before bedtime are becoming a daily occurrence.

๐“๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ evening, weโ€™re taking a break from all of it with a ๐๐š๐œ๐ค-๐ญ๐จ-๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ญ. Bring your teen or older child and create together, or come by yourself and enjoy 90 quiet minutes that belong entirely to you.

No art experience needed. Iโ€™ll guide you through everything one line at a time.

I'm looking forward to some shared creativity and mindfulness.

Iโ€™m trying to get into the habit of posting a little โ€œWhat did I create this week?โ€ reel on Sundays.

I already missed last Sunday, so clearly this routine is off to a very professional start. ๐Ÿ˜…

But I still created, and thatโ€™s the part I actually care about.

I finished my Zentangle , which was a lot. A lot of tiny lines, a lot of โ€œam I done yet?โ€, and a lot of joy.

I also played with watercolor some more. Iโ€™m still figuring it out, which means some parts work beautifully while others make me stare at the paper wondering what I'm doing.

But the fairy mushroom? ๐Ÿ„ Love it!

So hereโ€™s my slightly late weekly creative check-in. Finished pieces, experiments, learning curves, and a reminder that creating still counts even if I remember sharing on Tuesday instead of Sunday.

โ€œWhenever you are happy or feel good, generate the wish that your happiness might extend to bring happiness to all beings.โ€
- Patrul Rinpoche

I read this quote a few days ago, and it made me think.

Itโ€™s such a beautiful thought, isnโ€™t it? That when something feels good, we donโ€™t have to hold it tightly or keep it only for ourselves. We can let it ripple outward a little.

I think thatโ€™s one of the reasons I love creative spaces so much.

When someone finishes a drawing and looks at it with that little surprised smile, it doesnโ€™t stay only with them. You can feel it in the room. Someone else relaxes, gets curious, or starts believing, โ€œMaybe I can do this too.โ€

That kind of

Itโ€™s the same with the little things in daily life. A kind word, a small moment of patience, or a smile from a stranger can change the way the whole day feels.

Those moments matter. When we feel a little more grounded, we show up differently. Maybe a little calmer, a little kinder, a little less likely to lose our minds over something that, five minutes later, wasnโ€™t actually the end of the world.

So today, if something makes you feel good, notice it, enjoy it, and let it expand a little. That might be a bigger thing than we realize.

08/22/2026

I realized that every time I mention my Back-to-School Mind Reset class, I talk about bringing your teen or older child.

That can be a lovely way to spend the evening together, but it is absolutely not a requirement.

If what sounds good to you is 90 quiet minutes without anyone asking whatโ€™s for dinner, where their charger is, or whether you signed that school form, please come by yourself.

Weโ€™ll draw, slow down, and let the first couple of school weeks fade into the background for a while.

I asked ChatGPT how it thinks this makes me feel.

The summary of the answer?

Pretty accurate!

I'm not here to dismiss AI. It has its place.

But every time I see posts promising that AI can make something โ€œlook like a professional photographer did it,โ€ I feel that twitch.

Because photography isnโ€™t just pushing a button and transforming a file.

A professional portrait experience starts long before the final image. Itโ€™s the idea, the planning, the styling, the conversation, the trust, calming nerves, the tiny adjustments, the way someone slowly relaxes in front of the camera, and the moment they begin to see themselves differently.

- Itโ€™s knowing how to guide a child into a story so they forget theyโ€™re being photographed.

- Itโ€™s helping a woman feel beautiful again when she hasnโ€™t felt that way in a long time.

- Itโ€™s creating a fantasy world that actually means something to the person in it.

- Itโ€™s noticing the expression that matters, not just the one that looks โ€œperfect.โ€

AI can do impressive things. No argument there.

But the experience I create for my clients is not a prompt. Itโ€™s personal, collaborative, and thoughtful. I care deeply about connection, the process, and the final product. For many of my clients, that's worth just as much as the portrait itself.

Another day, another chance to play with art supplies and question my decisions. ๐Ÿ˜…

This started with a piece of watercolor paper, a tangle, some lines, and colored pencils. I didnโ€™t love how the pencil felt on the watercolor paper, so I went over parts of it with markers. The colors turned out way darker than I expected, the markers didnโ€™t blend the way I wanted, and at some point I thought, โ€œLetโ€™s use watercolor. What else could possibly go wrong?โ€

This still didnโ€™t feel right, so I sprayed the whole thing with water. Because once nothing is going according to plan, why not keep the adventure going, right?

After it dried, everything looked a little washed out, so I added some bold black-and-gold lines and called it done.

Nope.

It felt like it for a minute, but I decided to learn from it rather than seeing it as a failure.

This is why I like creating without a fixed outcome. In mindful drawing, the finished piece isnโ€™t always the point. Sometimes you learn what a paper doesnโ€™t like, what a marker will absolutely not do, which colors surprise you, and how far youโ€™re willing to keep going before you finally say, โ€œOkay, weโ€™re done here.โ€

The pretty finished pieces are fun to share, but the messy ones deserve to be talked about too, since they usually teach me more.

So Iโ€™m sharing this one because learning and evolving donโ€™t always look polished. Sometimes they look like trying the next thing, admitting it didnโ€™t quite work, and staying curious and playful anyway.

08/19/2026

When people hear โ€œfantasy portrait,โ€ they often picture fairies, mermaids, superheroes, and magical worlds.

I love all of that.

A few months ago, I created a portrait of myself soaking in a bathtub with a giant calming teabag. As one does. ๐Ÿ˜‰ A few years ago, I made one about feeling stuck and trying to figure out where to take my business next.

If you describe those ideas out loud, they probably sound a little strange.

At the time, they made perfect sense.

I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and craving rest. I was also in one of those โ€œwhere am I going with all of this?โ€ seasons that are super fun and not confusing at all.

Thatโ€™s what keeps pulling me back to this kind of work. Sometimes a portrait tells the story of a dream, a hope, or an adventure. Other times, it gives shape to a feeling, a question, or a season of life that would be hard to explain any other way.

Often, a picture isnโ€™t just a picture, but a way of saying, โ€œThis is what this felt like.โ€

Tomorrow is the first day of school here in Loudoun County. Back-to-school gets talked about as something the kids are doing, but in reality, doesn't the whole household feel it?

The alarm goes off earlier, calendars fill up quickly, and we are expected to remember where the lunch boxes, water bottles, and matching socks have been hiding all summer. ๐Ÿ˜„

Even when the new school year is exciting, shifting back into a routine can take a little time. Thatโ€™s why my Back-to-School Mind Reset Zentangleยฎ class is happening on August 27, after weโ€™ve all had a chance to survive the first week and figure out which part of the new routine is already testing our patience.

Youโ€™re welcome to bring your teen or older child and spend the evening drawing side by side. Youโ€™re also very welcome to come alone, especially if a quiet, creative evening sounds better than thinking about tomorrowโ€™s schedule for another two hours.

Today is Relaxation Day.

No, Iโ€™m not making this up. Itโ€™s on the official National Day Calendar.

Since some of us may need an official-looking excuse to stop trying to be productive for a moment, here you go.

Resting doesnโ€™t have to mean a vacation or a spa day, though both sound wonderful.

Sometimes itโ€™s sitting outside for a few minutes, taking a relaxing walk, drawing or writing a few lines, ignoring the laundry with confidence, or doing absolutely nothing and calling it nervous-system support.

Very official. Highly recommended. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Back-to-school season is in full swing, which means the stores are full of notebooks, lunch boxes, nervous energy, and parents quietly wondering how summer went by so fast.

Even if your kids are grown or you donโ€™t have kids in school, this time of year still has that โ€œfresh startโ€ feeling. Some may also use it as an excuse to get new books, new art supplies, new attempts at being organized. ๐Ÿซฃ

Wishing everyone a smooth start, a calm nervous system, and at least one cup of coffee thatโ€™s still warm when you drink it.
