I love the "remember this day 3 years ago..." messages that pop into my feed this time of year, because 3 years ago is when we were on sabbatical in Bordeaux.

It was such a transformative time for our family, but it required a TON of work!

I spent hours going down google rabbit holes trying to figure out where we should go and how to make all the logistics fall into place.

I truly believe all the work was worth it, and if you have the opportunity to move your family abroad for sabbatical, I'm your biggest cheerleader!

I created the Family Sabbatical Program to make the process of planning a family sabbatical abroad easier, so you can stress less and enjoy your sabbatical more.

It's a self-paced online program that you can start and complete anytime.

In it, I walk you through the process of:
-Identifying your sabbatical goals as a family
-Deciding where to go
-Putting all the logistics in place at home and abroad

Take the overwhelm out of planning your family sabbatical abroad.

Earlier this month, we were able to go back to Bordeaux, where we spent the first half of my sabbatical.

If you've been following me, you know that I describe my sabbatical as life-changing.

Bordeaux had a lot to do with that.

Being away from home and getting to explore a new city, connect in new ways with my family, make new friends, and disconnect from work and regular life was what helped me overcome burnout and get excited about my work again.

What I remember most about my sabbatical is not the work I got done or what I accomplished professionally.

What stands out are the adventures we had as a family, time spent with new friends, the fun I had being a novice at making pottery, and the sense of accomplishment I felt when I proved to myself that I could still train for and complete a half marathon.

What do you want to remember when you look back on your sabbatical?

If you're like most of the faculty I talk to, it's not the number of publications produced or hours logged on Zoom.

Most faculty want an experience that's transformative, whether they go somewhere new or stay home.

One of the best things about being a sabbatical coach is helping them figure out what they want from sabbatical and create a plan to make it happen.

The kids are back to school today, and full of ALL the back to school energy!

Even though summer felt too short, I do love back to school, with school supplies, new energy, and crisp fall mornings.

Back to school time always feels so optimistic. It's a great time for a fresh start.

Your sabbatical can be a fresh start, too--if you plan it with intention.

Curious about what that looks like?

Another amazing sabbatical planned with a client I'm going to miss seeing on a weekly basis!

I love how Annie, the professor who said my sabbatical planning program was life-changing for her, described WHY it was so transformative.

For Annie, the sabbatical planning process created space for reflection about how she was worked pretenure and what she wanted to change.

It gave her space to imagine a different way of working and relating, and an opportunity to envision new ideas and routines.

Annie's sabbatical is about reframing her relationship with work and stepping into the next phase of her career with confidence.

This is what my sabbatical coaching is all about.

Whether or not you work with me or purchase one of my programs, I hope this comes through loud and clear in every post, podcast, and email I send:

Planning a fulfilling and transformative sabbatical starts not with logistics and to-do lists, but with a focus on what you need and want from your time away (regardless of whether you're relocating or taking a stay-battical).

If you can take a step back from your goals and all the "shoulds" and tune in to what you really NEED, the rest falls into place so much more easily.

If you have a sabbatical coming up and are feeling anything like Beth--overwhelmed by the privilege of having a sabbatical and unsure how to make the most of it--then I want you to know you're not alone.

I have spoken to countless academics who feel this way and in most places there's no institutional support to navigate this.

You submit a sabbatical proposal, but that's not really a plan for how you'll use your time on sabbatical.

A successful sabbatical starts with identifying your sabbatical purpose and priorities and then crafting a plan aligned with those priorities.

Like Beth says, once you know your priorities, it's so much easier to decide how to spend your time.
