🚑 BEYOND THE LIGHTS & SIRENS — PART 4
🚑 AMBULANCE DOES NOT MEAN TAXI. 🚕
Calling 911 because you need medical help and calling 911 because you simply want a ride to the hospital are two very different things.
🌟An ambulance isn’t just a vehicle with flashing lights. It’s staffed by trained EMS professionals and equipped to assess, treat and monitor patients before and during transport.
👉When you call 911 for a medical emergency, you’re activating an emergency medical system—not requesting a taxi.
🚨 AN AMBULANCE IS A LIMITED RESOURCE
When an ambulance responds to a call and transports someone to the hospital, that crew and vehicle may be unavailable for another emergency until the transport and hospital handoff are complete.
If someone requests an ambulance solely because they want transportation—not because they need medical assessment, treatment or monitoring—it can take skilled providers away from patients experiencing genuine medical emergencies.
In rural communities like ours, where another available ambulance may be farther away, that matters.
💙🚑 We want people who need emergency medical care to call 911. The concern isn’t someone who is unsure whether their symptoms are serious. It’s using an emergency medical resource when the only need is a ride.
💵 AN AMBULANCE RIDE CAN BE EXPENSIVE
An ambulance is not priced like a taxi.
Depending on the ambulance service, level of care, distance traveled and insurance coverage, a transport can result in a bill exceeding $1,000—even when the patient primarily wanted transportation.
Charges and out-of-pocket costs vary, so there is no single price for every ambulance trip.
🏥 CALLING 911 DOESN’T GUARANTEE YOU’LL BE SEEN FASTER
Another common misconception is:
“If I go by ambulance, I’ll get straight into an ER room.”
Not necessarily.
Emergency departments use triage, which means patients are prioritized according to the severity of their illness or injury—not simply by how they arrived.
A critically ill patient may need immediate treatment. A stable patient who arrives by ambulance may still wait if other patients have more urgent medical needs.
🌟 An ambulance is not a shortcut around the emergency department waiting room.
🩺 SO WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL 911?
🚑 Call 911 when you believe someone may be experiencing a medical emergency—such as chest pain suggestive of a heart attack, stroke symptoms, severe difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, unconsciousness or another potentially life-threatening condition.
You do not need to know exactly what’s wrong before calling. If you’re uncertain whether a situation is an emergency, tell the dispatcher what’s happening so they can help guide the response.
But if you’re medically stable and only need transportation, consider a family member, friend, taxi, rideshare or an available non-emergency transportation service instead.
THE BOTTOM LINE 🚑 🆚 ️🚕
A taxi gets you from Point A to Point B.
An ambulance brings medical professionals, equipment, assessment and treatment to patients who may need care along the way.
🌟 Using EMS appropriately helps keep crews available for the next emergency—and ensures patients who need medical care can receive it.
The ambulance is the vehicle. The EMS crew is the medical resource.
