6.5 Creedmoor - 2,000 yards - 1.14 MILES - 6” × 10” steel milk jug. 🎯

About a year ago, I decided to find out if my 6.5 Creedmoor could get it done.

💥 Shot No. 7 — IMPACT!

Here’s what the short version doesn’t show: at 2,000 yards, spotting a miss from a 6.5mm bullet can be incredibly difficult. We didn’t see several of the impacts at all—which means no feedback and no correction. It’s pretty hard to make an adjustment when you have absolutely no idea where the last round went.

Fortunately, No. 7 found the jug. 😎

My good friend and instructor Nick Peterson was the first to complete our 2,000-yard challenge with a 6.5 Creedmoor. He’s now done it twice with the 6.5 and several times with his .300 Norma. This hit made me the second person to do it with a 6.5 Creedmoor, and I’ve managed it several more times since.

This might be the most unbelievable 1,000-yard shot we’ve ever witnessed. 🎯

And today is the perfect day to share it.

Happy 35th birthday to my best friend, Nick Peterson Nick 👊

Back in 2024, Nick attempted our 1,000-yard Milk Jug Challenge with a Shiloh Sharps 1874 Quigley in .45-70—a replica of the r***e made famous by Tom Selleck in Quigley Down Under.

No high-powered optic. No modern precision r***e.

Just a single-shot .45-70, a Vernier tang peep sight, reference points on the berm and one hell of a marksman behind it.

Our challenge gives you 10 shots.

On Shot No. 10… IMPACT. 💥

A 6” × 10” target at 1,000 YARDS. WITH IRON SIGHTS.

As incredible as the shot is, Nick’s story is even better.

At 28, just days before becoming a father for the first time, Nick went to the doctor for sinus problems and discovered he had an extremely rare cancer. Surgery took much of his sinuses and his right eye—his dominant eye. He was given a year to live.

Today he turned 35 🙌

The cancer has returned more than once but Nick keeps beating it. It’s given him a beautiful perspective on life (and a little extra luck at the shooting range). He’s made more unbelievable shots than anyone I know.

He’s become one of the finest marksmen and spotters I’ve ever known. He was the first person to complete our 2,000-yard Milk Jug Challenge with a 6.5 Creedmoor, and I’ve watched him make incredible shots more times than I can count.

But this one will always be one of my favorites.

That sigh of relief says everything. 😮‍💨🎯

We post a lot of videos of students smoking a milk jug on Shot No. 1, 2 or 3. But that’s not always how long-range shooting works—and I actually love that.

Justin Ross joined us for our August 28–29 Intro to Long Range class and rented one of our Aero Precision Solus 6.5 Creedmoor packages.

When he finally connected with that tiny 6” × 10” milk jug at 1,000 yards, listen to his reaction.

Pure relief.

Because this stuff isn’t easy.

At 1,000 yards, the shooter, r***e, am******on, DOPE and wind call all have to come together. Add the heavy rain and changing conditions we had that day, and missing by an inch can turn into missing by a foot with a small change in wind.

Our motto at LRSU is:

“Run your bolt, not your mouth.”

What does that mean?

Let your performance do the talking. Stay humble.

Occasionally accomplished shooters will comment on these videos mocking a beginner for needing multiple attempts or acting like hitting 1,000 yards or a mile isn’t a big deal.

I hate that mentality.

Every world-class shooter had a Day One. Every one of them took their first long-range shot at some point. Even Michael Jordan had a first day on a basketball court.

You never know if the beginner struggling today becomes a world champion tomorrow.

So encourage them. Help them. Remember where you started.

Justin stayed calm, kept applying what he’d learned and got the job done.

One flashlight. Four different ways to light up the mountains. 🔦🏔️

Olight sent us a few of their new ArkPro lights to put through their paces, so naturally I threw them in my pack and took them camping with the kids in Utah’s High Uintas.

These things are seriously cool.

The ArkPro packs FOUR light sources into one slim EDC light:

🟢 Green laser

And the laser can run simultaneously with the other light sources, giving you seven different configurations.

The kids obviously couldn’t get enough of the laser. 😂

First long-range class. First time beyond 1,000 yards. MILK JUG CHALLENGE SLAM. 🏆🎯

Francisco Francisco Santos from Chicago reached out about a year ago with a goal: build an incredible long-range r***e, come train with us, and eventually make the jump into PRS competition.

So we helped him start with the right equipment—and on August 28–29, he finally made it out for our Intro to Long Range Shooting class.

Francisco was the ONLY student in the class to complete the Milk Jug Challenge Slam:

🎯 1,200 yards — Shot No. 3
🎯 1,500 yards — Shot No. 7
🎯 1 MILE — Shot No. 7 💥

The shots immediately before his one-mile impact were missing that tiny 6” × 10” target by mere inches. At that point, the call was simple: don’t change anything.

At a mile, even an exceptionally tight group is larger than the jug. Get centered, stay in the same patch of wind, trust the r***e and keep sending them.

Francisco did exactly that.

To accomplish the Slam in his very first long-range class—and his first time shooting these distances—was outstanding.

Cheap guns. Cheap ammo. Expensive watches. 😂⌚

After wrapping up our August 28–29 Intro to Long Range class, Nick — — and I decided it was time to put the precision r***es away and make some BRRRRRRRRT.

Enter the Ta**us TX22 with an FRT.

This little thing is basically a miniature A-10. 😂

Suppressed. Unsuppressed. Daylight. After dark. Brass absolutely EVERYWHERE.

We even threw a Holosun on the back to add a little weight to the slide and tame things down a bit—and this thing just RAN.

The only malfunction we experienced was eventually running out of .22. 😂

There’s something hilariously satisfying about burning through cheap rimfire ammo while Nick has a Rolex Deepsea worth more than most of the guns on the firing line strapped to his wrist.

Sometimes the simplest guns produce the biggest smiles.

INTRO TO LONG RANGE | AUGUST 28–29 🎯

Another incredible class in the books!

20 students joined us from California, Utah, Arizona, Illinois, Colorado and Germany — and despite some wild rain rolling through during the day, conditions were fantastic with surprisingly mild wind.

And once again…

🎯 EVERY. SINGLE. STUDENT. hit the 1,000-yard Milk Jug.

20 students. 20 hits. Our 1,000-yard guarantee remains intact.

A few shooters wasted absolutely no time:
