That’s how long it’s been since we’ve had a Melvindale wrestler bring home a state title.

And the last time it happened, we didn’t have one…

We had two. 🏆🏆

Back in 2016, two of our seniors won state titles and went on to wrestle at the Division I college level.

Just wanted to take a look back and give these two Cardinals the recognition they deserve. Their names will always be a part of Melvindale Wrestling history. 🔴⚪️

AMEER MUNASSAR
2016 State Champion 152 lbs
Record: 52–1

Ameer had an incredible senior season, finishing with a 52–1 record.

His only loss came in the regional finals against Brandon Garcia of Riverview, where he lost in overtime.

Ameer would get the chance to wrestle Garcia again in the state finals, and this time he came out on top, winning the state championship and avenging his only loss of the season.

A special season and a well earned state title. 💪🏻

JULIAN SALDANA
2016 State Champion — 119 lbs
Record: 58–1

Julian’s senior season was one to remember.

He took his only loss early in the second week of the season to 4-time state champion. From there, Julian went on a run and didn’t lose another match all season.

Then, in the state finals, Julian faced an undefeated 2-time state champion and Cornell commit and came away with the win to become a state champion himself.

58–1 and a state championship to finish off an incredible senior season. 🏆🔴⚪️

Welcome back, Coach! 🤼‍♂️

2 years as Head Coach
2 years as Assistant Coach

After some time away, he’s back in the room and joining our staff as an Assistant Coach. He’s been a part of this program in a lot of different ways, and we’re excited to have him back around the team.

Big thank you to Lachlan McNeil for coming out today and getting some work in with us! We had 50+ wrestlers in the room, and it was a great day of wrestling.

It’s not every day you get the opportunity to learn and wrestle with someone like Lachlan. Hopefully the kids were able to take something from today and bring it with them moving forward.

Appreciate you coming out, Lachlan! 🤼‍♂️🔥

Melvindale Wrestling is opening the room back up! 🤼‍♂️

Starting Sunday, August 23rd, all Melvindale wrestlers of all ages are welcome to come lift, wrestle, and get some work in. 💪

We’d also love to invite all of our Melvindale Wrestling alumni to come back, get on the mat, and spend some time in the room with us. 🐺🔥

What an amazing day for Melvindale Wrestling!

A huge thank you to Johnni DiJulius and Dylan Palacio for putting on one of the best camps we’ve ever hosted.

Johnni is a 3-time Ohio State Champion, 4-time NCAA Qualifier at Ohio State, and a member of the 2015 NCAA National Championship Team. Dylan is an NCAA All-American and multiple-time NCAA Qualifier from Cornell University. Their experience and knowledge made a huge impact on our wrestlers.

They kept the kids engaged all day, and even though it was an all-day camp, it never felt like one. It was a fun, high-energy learning experience from start to finish. We highly recommend them to any program looking to host a camp, and we can’t wait to bring them back to Melvindale!

Lastly, a huge shoutout to Coach Nasr. This camp doesn’t happen without him. He handled all the behind-the-scenes work—from organizing the day, setting up the mats and food, to making sure everything ran smoothly. Thank you, Coach Nasr, for everything you do for our program!
