We were a small but mighty hiking crew this morning, and we even had 3 ladies who came out for the first time.

☀️And what a beautiful day on the trail. Despite the bees in the parking lot (never have seen that many…they’ve must’ve come out to welcome us) this was a fun hike on the mostly tree covered trail. FYI….10k North Trail is also a great one to revisit at the end of September to see the Aspens changing color.

🥾It’s always fun introducing new trails to people and meeting all the dogs along the way. We chatted work, favorite hikes, and feasts! Almost all us were at Jemez feast last weekend and we didn’t even know it! Aha…

⛰️We are already looking forward to next month’s hike. But we haven’t decided on the trail yet, so let us know in the comments what Albuquerque area hike that you would love to do.

Let’s get out of town and go for a hike in the mountains! This is your chance to head up to 10,000 ft and hike the beautiful 10k trail. All the details below:)

⭐️Group Hike, 5.3 miles
🗓️Sat, Aug 8th at 8 am.
📍10K North Trailhead on the east side of the Sandia Mountains outside of Albuquerque, NM.
📈Elevation gain = 800 ft
💦Bring water and snacks you can carry on the hike.
⛰️This trail is up the mountain, sitting at 10,000 ft (ABQ sits at around 5,300 ft.), so you may be thirstier and hungrier than you normally are at lower elevation hikes. (That’s code for bring extra water and snacks!)
⛰️This is a nice green hike in the woods with a rewarding view at the top. Much of the trail has tree cover, but there are spots that pop out in the sun.
🚽Toilets are available at the trailhead, but no running water.
🚙You can put 10k trail into Google Maps for directions.
☕️Need caffeine on the way in? Make a stop at Cabra Coffee in Cedar Crest to fuel up.

TRAIL RUN OPTION
🏃🏽‍♀️Those training for the Mt Taylor 50k in September may wish to run the trail ahead of the hikers. OR you can hike with us and then afterward go across the street and run the 10k South trail. If you do both trails, it’s around 10 miles, and you can use your car as a personal aid station.
⚠️Note: trail runners should plan to be self-supported since the main group will only be hiking the 10k North Trail.

We tried something new this morning with our Morning Xpress 5k, and we had 4 new runners come out for it!

☀️The summer heat has been 🥵 punishing lately, so thought we would try the Tramway Recreation Trail at 6 am. Since the sun is still behind the mountains that early, we knew even if the air was warm at least we wouldn’t get baked into little fry bread.

🏃🏽‍♀️Turns out, it was a comfortable time to run! So, I think we will try another early AM run next month.

🤗Thank you to everyone who came, and it was so nice to meet all of our first-timers. We hope to see you back.

✅What’s next? Well, we have our 10k hike planned for this Sat, Aug 4. Check our next post for all the details.

Almost forgot to get this reminder up for our run TOMORROW, Tuesday, Aug 4. See you early risers there!

⭐️Morning Xpress 5k
🗓️Tues, Aug 4. We are starting this run exactly at 6 am, so plan to meet up by 5:50 am.
📍Tramway Recreation Trail. This will be an out and back on the paved path that runs next to Tramway Blvd.
🚙Park at W L Jackson Park on Cedar Hill Rd. It’s right on the corner of Tramway, so easy access to start our run. Note: parallel parking only here.
✅We are trying something new with this early AM run! We are calling it “Xpress” because we will have snacks and the group photo before the run and runners are welcome to leave just as soon as they’re done. Don’t be late because we will start on time so folks can make it to work after the run.
🤗Walkers welcome.

We were so busy that we missed getting a group photo, BUT we had a true adventure this past Saturday running the first Mt Taylor 50k course preview run (aka the first half of the course).

❤️A BIG thank you to the Mt Taylor race directors for organizing this. Since several of our NWR runners plan to run the 50k race in September, we built this first course preview run into our July event schedule. And I think it was all of our crew’s first time on this course.

⛰️And so glad we did because this is a tough course. But Good news….the course has stunning views😍. Besides the views, this was a good challenge for us so we know what to expect, and more importantly, what to work on before race day.

🏃🏽‍♀️Saturday was a true adventure run though. It started out a cool, sunny run, but we got thunderstormed on for the second half of the run. Lightning was striking around us, and several runners even smelled smoke in the air. Let’s just say, we suddenly ran ALOT faster when we smelled smoke. But it was raining so hard that the smoke smell soon dissipated as any small tree fires were put out by the downpour.

✅A special thank you to race director Jesse, who hung around til all our runners finished the course. He was so kind and supportive which we love in a race director!

Thank you to Running Medicine for inviting us to collab on the Twilight Series Runs this summer. We hosted the second run in the series this past Thursday, and it was fun to run with new folks.

📸We didn’t get as many photos as usual because we were busy marking the course, signing folks in, running, and doing giveaways. But it was a great opportunity to get together and celebrate both of our Native-serving organizations!

Reminder…we have TWO events this week. Hope to see you there 🤗.

⭐️Twilight Series Run #2 with Running Medicine, 5k/2 mi/1 mi options.
🗓️Thurs, Jul 16 at 7:30 pm
📍Rio Grande Park, 1744 Kit Carson Ave SE, Albuquerque.
🎁Be sure to arrive early to sign in, complete the event waiver, and get your raffle ticket for giveaways! We will do giveaways after the run.
👟Walkers Welcome!
🙋🏽‍♀️Looking for one NWR volunteer to help with sign in and stay behind during the run to watch our table/stuff. If you can help out, please dm this account to let our group lead, Nicole, know and plan to arrive by 7:15 pm.

⭐️Mt Taylor 50k Training Run, around 15 miles.
🗓️Sat, Jul 18 at 8 am
📍Rock Tank (race start/finish line) in Grants, NM.
🏃🏽‍♀️If you’re planning to run the Mt Taylor 50k in Sep, this is a great opportunity to preview the first half of the course.
⌚️Since we are joining the Mt Taylor crew who is organizing this one, recommend everyone arrive a few minutes early so you can sync up with the right group that will match your planned pace.
🥪We are running with a group, but this is still pretty much self-supported so be sure to bring the nutrition you need to complete 15 miles.

We had a good trail run this evening! Thank you to our regulars and welcome to all the first-timers joined us. You all did a great job running in the heat. I think it was about 98 degrees 🥵when we started our run so we weren’t sad when the clouds rolled in to cool things off (but we were also done running when the clouds rolled in though 😂).

🏃🏽‍♀️It’s powerful when Native women come together to run the land. We had several different tribes represented this evening. I think our ancestors would be proud ❤️.
