Kres began racing in 1998 at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, VA, driving a Mini Stock at the age of 16, and won the Mini Stock championship in 2000 with a total of 15 wins. In 2001, Kres began racing Late Model Stock Cars, finishing third in final point standings and as runner-up in 2002 at Kingsport Speedway.
