The South Sudanese Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has summoned four ambassadors following a joint statement questioning the planned December 2026 elections.

The envoys, representing Germany, Japan, Norway, and the United States, were called in connection with a joint statement they issued on August 26, 2026, expressing concerns about the electoral process.

Foreign Affairs Minister Amb. Dr. James Pitia Morgan conveyed the Government’s concern over the statement, describing it as inappropriate and potentially divisive at a time when the country is preparing for elections. He emphasized the importance of national ownership and adherence to diplomatic principles, including respect for South Sudan’s internal affairs.

Minister Morgan reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to implementing the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan and advancing preparations for the elections. He stressed that the Government remains determined to guide the country toward a peaceful, stable, and orderly electoral process.

Authorities have suspended the “Silence Search” operation, which was aimed at verifying the documentation and legal status of foreign nationals across the country.

The Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passport and Immigration said such an initiative requires proper coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreign diplomatic missions, and other relevant institutions. It also requires authorization from the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

In a directive signed by Lt. Gen. Achol Cyier Rehan, all police stations and state authorities have been instructed to halt any involvement in the operation until further notice. Authorities are expected to await new guidance before resuming any related activities.

The prosecution has asked the court to revise the procedure for examining accused persons as suspended Vice President Dr. Riek Machar prepares to present his defence. Lead Prosecutor Ajo Onyi Ohisa proposed that accused persons first be questioned on the prosecution’s evidence before presenting their defence statements.

The request follows the examination of four accused persons under the existing procedure, in which they presented their defence statements before being questioned. Machar’s lead defence counsel, Dr. Geri Raymond Legge, requested additional time to study the application and prepare a response.

The court granted the request and adjourned the proceedings until August 26, 2026. The judges will then hear arguments from both sides before deciding whether to adopt the proposed procedure for Dr. Machar and the remaining accused persons.
