The ancestor of the breed was a thoroughbred stallion named Messenger, an English gallop winner whose ancestors, as it should be a thoroughbred, were Norfolk trotters. The messenger itself was a marvel of selection, but other horses that contributed to the new breed must also be evaluated: pacers and trotters, capable of long transitions across vast plains and of swift races.
