In October 1989, Lumpinee Stadium saw a rematch between two of the toughest fighters of Thailand’s Golden Era.
In one corner was Cherry Sor. Wanich, the reigning Lumpinee 130 lb champion. Only a few months earlier, Cherry had beaten Saencheng Pinsinchai to take the title, and now he had to prove that victory was no accident.
Across from him stood Saencheng Pinsinchai, a highly experienced former Lumpinee champion in multiple weight divisions. Known as “The Stone Man,” Saencheng had built his reputation on toughness, composure and the ability to keep fighting under pressure.
Cherry, meanwhile, was developing into one of the most dangerous knee fighters of the era. His strength was in closing the distance, forcing the clinch and using relentless knees to wear opponents down.
That made this rematch especially interesting.
Saencheng knew exactly what Cherry wanted to do. He tried to control the pace, keep his balance and prevent Cherry from dominating at close range. But Cherry kept pressing forward, looking to turn the fight into the kind of physical battle that suited him.
As the rounds progressed, Cherry’s pressure began to tell.
He remained strong in the clinch, continued to score with knees and refused to allow Saencheng the space he needed to take control of the fight. Saencheng showed the durability and technical ability that had made him a champion, but Cherry was able to impose himself over the full five rounds.
When the decision was announced, Cherry Sor. Wanich had successfully defended his Lumpinee Stadium championship.
It was another important victory in an outstanding 1989 campaign for Cherry, a year in which he established himself among the elite fighters of the Golden Era.
A reigning champion defending his crown against the former champion he had taken it from only months before.

Ajarn Boonlai showed me this fight yesterday, its his twin brother Boonlong....what a fight i had never seen this one before.

Boonlong's life was tragically cut short during his fighting career when he died in a road accident.
