ASTRODOME - The Astrodome was more than a ballpark - it was a stage for sports, entertainment, politics, and Houston history.
When the $31.6-million Astrodome opened in 1965, nothing like it had ever been built. Billed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” it would become much more than the home of the Houston Astros, it became Houston’s stage for sports, entertainment, politics, and history.
It was home to the Houston Astros, Houston Oilers, and University of Houston football, and hosted the historic Houston vs. UCLA “Game of the Century” basketball matchup. But the Dome was never just about sports.
It welcomed rodeos, major concerts and entertainers such as Michael Jackson, home and trade shows, and the Republican National Convention, along with countless other events that brought millions of people through its doors.
From baseball and football to basketball, rodeos, concerts, conventions, and community events, the “Eighth Wonder of the World” was truly Houston’s stage.

TRAINING PITCHERS IN-SEASON. The best in-season program in April may not be the best program in August.
As innings accumulate and fatigue increases, training has to evolve. JOSE SALAS OF THE MILWAUKEE BREWERS explains how lower-body training can shift from building capacity early in the season to preserving power later - without eliminating grip work.
The goal isn't to stop training hard. It's to apply the right stress at the right time.

Baseball History – On this date – August 22, 1989 – Nolan Ryan recorded his 5,000th K.
The box score tells us Rickey Henderson was Nolan’s 5,000th strikeout. It doesn’t tell us what happened when the two future Hall of Famers met after the game.
The backstory: Nolan told me that before the game, the visiting clubhouse manager called the Rangers clubhouse and said Rickey had been going around telling his teammates: “It’s got to be somebody, but it ain’t going to be Rickey.”
That was Nolan Ryan. Fiercely competitive on the field, but never one to rub it in. He had every opportunity to remind Rickey of what he had said before the game, but that wasn’t Nolan. He simply tapped him on the hip, said, “It had to be someone,” and politely went his way.

Some baseball quotes are too good to forget.
I was with the Texas Rangers in 1981 and 1982, and I remember reading this one from Mickey Rivers in the newspaper.
More than 40 years later, it still makes me smile.
