JUBA, June 26, 2026 โ The Council of Ministers has approved funding to support South Sudan's national basketball and football teams as they prepare for major international competitions, while also endorsing key fiscal reforms aimed at strengthening non-oil revenue collection and promoting long-term economic stability.
The decisions were reached during the Cabinet's regular meeting chaired by His Excellency President Salva Kilr Mayardit on Friday.
As part of the government's broader economic reform agenda, the Cabinet approved the removal of non-statutory tax exemptions and established a committee to oversee the implementation of the new policy. The measure is intended to eliminate discretionary exemptions granted outside the law, strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation, broaden the tax base, and enhance the government's ability to finance essential public services and national development priorities.
The Council also reviewed ongoing efforts to improve liquidity within the banking sector and encourage greater circulation of the national currency through the formal financial system as part of wider measures to stabilise the economy.
In a separate decision, the Cabinet approved the release of funds to facilitate the participation and preparations of South Sudan's national basketball and football teams in upcoming international competitions. The support will cover training, logistics, registration, and related operational requirements.
South Sudan's national basketball and football teams have already travelled and commenced their preparations ahead of their respective tournaments, while the funding will also ensure the teams are adequately supported as they prepare to represent the country on the international stage.
The Cabinet reaffirmed the government's commitment to investing in youth and sports as an important avenue for national unity, international representation, and the development of young talent, while continuing to pursue prudent economic reforms aimed at restoring fiscal sustainability and improving public service delivery.
