Barcelona already have one of the best midfields in Europe.

Pedri, De Jong, Bernal, Gavi, Casadó and Dani Olmo are all quality midfielders.

So why were we so excited about Rodri?

Because Rodri changes the entire structure of the team.

Barcelona's biggest problem in recent Champions League campaigns has not been creating chances. We have scored enough goals.

The problem has been controlling those huge knockout games when everything becomes chaotic.

Look at the Inter Milan tie. We scored enough goals, but we couldn't protect our advantage. Once the game became chaotic, we struggled to regain control.

Another problem is that we have often struggled against big teams that are brave enough to come out and play against us, especially when they have quality midfielders.

Once Pedri gets tired, or our pressing stops working, the entire structure can start collapsing. When Raphinha is unavailable, we struggle to win big games because the pressing collapses and our midfield easily becomes exposed.

That is where Rodri becomes different.

He is the type of midfielder who can calm a game down when everyone else is panicking. He can control the tempo, win second balls and, most importantly, give us a physical presence in the middle that helps maintain our balance even when the pressing isn't perfect.

This is also why the Pedri–De Jong pivot can sometimes leave us exposed. They are excellent on the ball, but defensively, they don't give us the same protection against transitions.

Now imagine Rodri + Pedri in a double pivot.

Pedri has more freedom to focus on progressing the ball and controlling the game instead of constantly worrying about what is happening behind him.

De Jong can also play more freely as a No.8, while Bernal gets the opportunity to learn from Rodri.

And if Pedri gets injured, we wouldn't feel his absence as much as we would without Rodri.

I honestly don't see Atlético changing their stance at this point. I expected to see more urgency from Álvarez after returning to Atlético.

Instead, everything has looked far too calm, as if there’s no transfer situation at all. Waiting until Saturday before Barça decide to move on isn't okay with me, just my opinion.

That would leave us with just a week and a few days to find another striker, negotiate a deal and get everything done.

At that stage, the club could end up overpaying for a player because there wouldn't be enough time to negotiate properly. We should never have allowed ourselves to get into this situation.

Barça should have moved on much earlier instead of waiting until the final week of the transfer window to start looking elsewhere.
