Coach Desmond Yong recommend starting formal swim lessons between ages 4 and 6, once a child can follow simple instructions and has enough body control to practise basic movements.

Here's a simple age guide:
4–6 years old: Ideal age to begin structured lessons — coordination and listening skills are developed enough for SwimSafer Stage 1

Looking for kids’ swimming lessons in Bedok, HeartbeatBedok Singapore?

SwimCoach Desmond from swims.sg shows how backstroke technique can be taught through a clear, structured progression. He first explains the movement on the pool deck and then demonstrates the complete backstroke in the water.
Watch Coach Desmond Yong of swimS.sg break down body position, shoulder-driven arm movement, breathing rhythm, the finishing push, and core-driven flutter kicking before demonstrating the complete stroke in the pool.

Structured swimming classes are available at Heartbeat @ Bedok, while enrolment is open for planned classes at Bedok Swimming Complex. Send your child’s age, current ability, and preferred lesson time to receive a class recommendation.

The lesson highlights important backstroke fundamentals, including a streamlined body position, chest-up posture, shoulder-driven arm action, a strong push at the end of the pull, steady breathing rhythm, and flutter kicking from the core. This step-by-step approach helps swimmers understand both what to do and why each movement matters.

Coach Desmond is an NROC and MOE Registered Swim Coach and a SwimSafer 2.0 Instructor and Assessor. swimS.sg provides structured children’s swimming lessons for complete beginners, improving swimmers, and children progressing through SwimSafer.

My 12-year-old outpaced me with AI — and it made me rethink how I coach.

Charisse uploaded one photo of my face, typed a few words, and in 5 seconds handed me back a full 80s-style photoshoot. Hair, jacket, neon lasers, the works. (See attached 😂)

No camera. No studio. Just a kid and an app.

As a swim coach, that moment stuck with me. Because the same shift is happening in how parents choose swim schools, track progress, and decide who to trust with their child's safety in the water.

Parents today are researching coaches online before they even step into the pool. They're comparing SwimSafer progress, reading reviews, and forming an opinion of us before we've said a word.

So here's what I've been leaning into:

→ Using AI to personalize how I communicate a child's progress to parents — clearer, faster updates.
→ Being more intentional about how our coaches and school show up online, not just in the pool.
→ Reminding my team that technical skill in the water still comes first — AI just helps us communicate it better.

I'm not a tech guy. I'm a swim coach who got humbled by his own kid. But it's exactly why I'm learning to use these tools — not to replace good coaching, but to help more families find and trust good coaching.

👇 Parents and coaches — how has AI changed the way you choose (or run) a swim school?

Improve your butterfly stroke with Coach Desmond Yong.
Correct butterfly arm recovery depends on timing.
In this lesson, Coach Desmond Yong from swimS.sg demonstrates three important cues:
- Complete the underwater pull.
- Let the head go down first.
- Recover the arms from the sides towards the 11 o’clock position.

This step-by-step swimming drill helps learners understand how the head, shoulders and arms work together during butterfly recovery.

Save this Reel for your next swimming practice and share it with someone learning butterfly stroke.
