📍 Layers of Bishan

Today, our challenge wasn't to complete a hike.

It was to uncover the layers hidden within an everyday neighbourhood.

With only a map and a mission, our teams navigated through Bishan, discovering how history, community, nature and modern city life all come together in one place.

From quiet corners to lively public spaces, every stop reminded us that a neighbourhood isn't just made up of buildings—it's shaped by the people who live there and the stories it carries.

We started by learning how to read a map. We finished by learning how to read a place.

📍 Beyond the Blocks | Bukit Gombak

Most people see an ordinary HDB estate. We were challenged to see something more.

Armed with only a map, our teams planned our own routes, made our own decisions and explored Bukit Gombak with one mission—to prove that every neighbourhood has a story worth discovering.

From hidden green spaces to Little Guilin's dramatic landscape, we realised that adventure doesn't always begin in a forest. Sometimes, it begins just outside the MRT station.

🧭 Every route was different.
👀 Every discovery was unique.
🏡 Every team found a different reason to appreciate this place.

Maybe the best adventures aren't about travelling further—but learning to see familiar places differently.

Sometimes, the best adventures happen just a few MRT stops from home. 🌿🌊

This week, our 15-year-olds set out on a self-directed hike through Pasir Ris with a simple question:
What do you appreciate about this place?

Armed with a map and a set of exploration criteria, each team planned their own route through the estate. There wasn't a "correct" path—only meaningful choices and discoveries waiting to be made.

Along the way, they looked beyond reaching the next checkpoint.
🌳 A quiet park where families gather.
🌊 The calming sea breeze along the coastline. ☕ A neighbourhood café filled with stories.
🦜 Wildlife hiding in plain sight.
😊 Small moments that made them pause and smile.

The final challenge? Each student group created their own Instagram Reel, capturing the places, people and moments that stood out to them, and sharing why these places mattered.

Every reel was different because every team experienced Pasir Ris differently.
After all, appreciation begins when we stop rushing through a place and start noticing what makes it special 🧭

What if we stopped telling students where to go... and let them decide instead? 🗺️
This week, our 15-year-olds took on a different kind of adventure.
Starting from Seletar Aerospace Park, their mission was simple: find their own way back to school in Fernvale.
No step-by-step instructions. No leader walking in front.
Instead, each team was given a set of criteria to fulfil. From there, every decision was theirs:
📍 Which route should we take?
📍 Which checkpoints best showcase the places we pass?
📍 How do we solve disagreements as a team?
📍 How do we stay on schedule while still exploring?

The final challenge wasn't just to complete the hike.
🎥 Each student group had to produce their own Instagram Reel, telling the story of their journey through their own lens. They decided what to film, what moments mattered, and how to share what they discovered about the places, their teammates, and themselves.

Because learning isn't complete until you can tell the story. Sometimes the best classroom doesn't have four walls—it starts with an idea, a destination, and the confidence to choose your own path. 🌿🧭
