As I became increasingly engaged with the impeachment trial, I found myself eagerly anticipating the eighth day of the proceedings. I was particularly interested in seeing how the witnesses would respond to the questions from both the prosecution and the defense, as well as how the senator-judges would interject to clarify issues that arose during the testimony.

Among the many exchanges that unfolded throughout the day, one stood out to me above all others: the defense's cross-examination of NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag by Atty. Mark Vinluan. From the outset, I was struck by Atty. Vinluan's precise and disciplined approach to questioning the witness.

Given Director Matibag's position in government, one would naturally expect him to testify with confidence and composure. Yet throughout the examination, Atty. Vinluan remained calm, methodical, and deliberate. Every question appeared to serve a purpose, with each answer laying the foundation for the next.

One moment that particularly caught my attention was when Atty. Vinluan established on the record that Atty. Matibag's wife is a member of the House of Representatives and one of the endorsers of the impeachment complaint against the Vice President. That line of questioning naturally raised the issue of whether Director Matibag's appearance might be perceived as being connected to his wife's role in the impeachment process.

Director Matibag immediately addressed that point by stating that he was appearing before the Senate Impeachment Court in compliance with a subpoena, emphasizing that his attendance was official rather than a matter of personal choice or affiliation.

Atty. Vinluan then followed with a simple yet crucial question, asking Director Matibag to clarify whether he was truly appearing by virtue of a subpoena and whether such a subpoena had, in fact, been issued to him.

To me, that was one of the defining moments of the cross-examination. Atty. Vinluan didn't raise his voice or resort to theatrics. Instead, he relied on a single, carefully framed follow-up question. From that point on, I observed what appeared to be a gradual shift in Director Matibag's composure. His responses seemed less certain and, at times, more tentative than they had been moments earlier. In my view, Atty. Vinluan systematically unraveled the confidence with which the witness had begun his testimony.

The exchange also struck me as significant because, from my perspective, it prompted a noticeable reaction from the prosecution panel, particularly Congresswoman Jerville Luistro, who appeared momentarily taken aback by how the line of questioning unfolded.

Shortly thereafter, Presiding Officer Francis "Chiz" Escudero clarified that no written subpoena had been issued and that Director Matibag had appeared upon the prosecution's request.

That exchange reminded me that the most effective cross-examinations are not always the loudest or the longest. Sometimes, they hinge on a single, well-timed question that prompts everyone in the room to pause and reconsider the facts.

As always, these are simply my personal observations while following the proceedings. The Senate Impeachment Court alone has the authority to determine the significance of the testimony and the weight to be given to the evidence presented.

Ultimately, what stood out to me most was Atty. Vinluan's style of advocacy. His questioning was calm, calculated, and remarkably precise. There was no need for dramatic exchanges because the questions themselves did the work. To me, that is what made the proceedings so compelling to watch, and it left me genuinely looking forward to seeing where his line of questioning leads next.
