How to Fold Your Karate Gi
A karate gi is more than just a training uniform—it represents discipline, respect, and the spirit of karate. Learning to fold your gi properly is a small habit that reflects the values practiced inside the dojo. A neatly folded gi stays clean, avoids wrinkles, saves space in your training bag, and shows appreciation for the art you practice.
The poster above presents two practical methods for folding a karate gi: Maki no Gi (Roll Method) and Shikaku no Gi (Square Fold Method). Each has its own advantages depending on your needs.
Method 1: "Maki no Gi" (Roll Method) is ideal for students who travel frequently or carry their uniform in a sports bag. Start by laying the jacket flat and folding the sleeves inward. Fold the pants neatly and place them on top of the jacket. Fold the sides inward to create a long rectangle, then roll the uniform tightly from one end to the other. Finally, secure the roll using your black belt. This method keeps the gi compact and minimizes movement inside your bag while helping reduce deep wrinkles.
Method 2: "Shikaku no Gi" (Square Fold Method) is a traditional folding style that creates a clean, square package. Lay the jacket flat, fold the sleeves across the body, and position the pants neatly over the jacket. Fold the bottom upward, then fold both sides inward to form a compact square. Wrap the folded gi with your belt to keep everything secure. This method is excellent for storing your uniform on a shelf or presenting it neatly before class.
Regardless of which method you choose, there are a few important habits to follow. Always wash your gi after training to remove sweat and bacteria. Allow it to dry completely before folding, as trapped moisture can create unpleasant odors or mildew. Store your belt separately if it is damp, and avoid throwing your gi into your bag in a crumpled pile. Taking just a few extra minutes to fold it properly will extend the life of the fabric and maintain a professional appearance.
In karate, every detail matters. The way you bow, tie your belt, clean the dojo, and fold your gi all reflect your mindset. These simple routines build discipline, patience, and respect—qualities that define a true karateka. Remember, excellence is created through consistent attention to small details. By treating your gi with care, you also honor your instructors, your dojo, and the traditions of karate that have been passed down through generations.
