In The North East Corner Of Fort Kochi Parade Ground Stands a Majestic Peeple Tree,the Oldest Known In Kochi.In 1999 this tree Was Venerated With the Title "THE MOTHER TREE".Smt.Kamala Das,a renowned Literary Personality,Wrapped a Ponnada around this tree Christening it With this honourable name during the Opening ceremony of the first TREE FESTIVAL ever held in kerala, organised by "People's Fore
st", A 'grass roots' environmental organisation in Fort Kochi. Her extending branches have provided shelter for many cultural personalities as they performed, paying homgage to all the Mother Tree represents. Some of the recent performers in the Mother Tree's long history include: K.J. Yesudas, Usha Utup, Daksha Seth, Martha Boesing, Bettina Wenzel, Pandit Ajit Singh, Guillermo Horta, Maite, Tilotama Koshy and Karen Zusman. The Mother Tree has a long history of hosting cultural programs, especially musical events. For generations this has been a hang-out for the young and enthusiastic. It has witnessed years of cultural fusion throughout the colonial periods and for 63 years of independance. Today the tradition of cultural celebrations is expected to continue with "TREE FRESH" a youth collaborated union. We hope that the young people here today find this tradition worthwhile and will pass it on for generations to come. The "MOTHER TREE" celebration has been a platform to showcase all sections of people of this Multi_Ethnic town for "The Renewal of the Ritual of Life".
