Baltic Sea research aboard RV Oceanograf 🌊

These photos were taken during a research cruise aboard the RV Oceanograf. The project used a specialized device designed to collect seabed samples from depths of up to 1000 meters.

The system can collect 10 separate samples during a single deployment. Each container closes automatically after collection, helping prevent contamination and preserve the integrity of the material.

Although the device is lowered from the vessel on a cable, it is also equipped with thrusters that allow it to move horizontally, similar to an ROV. Four HD cameras and underwater lighting provide a real-time view of the seabed, making it possible to precisely select sampling locations and monitor the entire process.

The research was conducted near the Torpedownia, where scientists examined fuel contamination in seabed sediments around the wreck of the Stuttgart. The collected samples will help assess the environmental impact of historical pollution in the Baltic Sea.
