What you're looking at is not a trick of the camera. It is a 150-year-old circus discipline called Iron Jaw.
The performer bites down on a custom-fitted leather mouthpiece, usually a thick leather-and-metal strap about a foot long with a hook or extension on the other end. That bite is her only point of support while she is lifted into the air and folds her body into positions that look physically impossible. The mouthpiece is built to spread the pressure across the jaw so the teeth and jaw joint can actually hold real weight without snapping.
The act traces back to at least 1872, when American aerialist Leona Dare, known as the Queen of the Antilles, debuted it with a traveling circus. In one of her most famous stunts, she hung suspended beneath a hot air balloon and lifted her own husband off the ground by the waist, using nothing but her teeth.
A few years later, in 1879, a performer known as Miss La La took the act even further at the Cirque Fernando in Paris. She would hang by her knees from a trapeze, grip a second trapeze in her teeth, and support other performers taking turns posing on it below her, sometimes holding the combined weight of several people at once. Her act was so striking that the painter Edgar Degas immortalized her in one of his most famous works, Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando, which now hangs in London's National Gallery.
The discipline is sometimes called the Human Butterfly, because performers traditionally wore removable wings as part of the costume, echoed here in the shimmering wing-like outfit. In its more extreme circus history, a spinning variation known as the "whirl of death" attached a motor to the bit and spun the performer at high speed, though that version is rarely attempted today.
Getting to this level of control takes years. Performers spend seasons building jaw, neck, and core strength before they ever attempt full suspension, conditioning the body the same deliberate way a weightlifter builds up to a heavy lift.
Your body can be trained to do things that look like they belong in a magic show. This one just happens to run through the jaw.
