You didn't invent this pattern. You inherited it.

Step one of SHIFT is noticing a pattern exists. Step two — Hidden Patterns — is harder: finding where it actually came from. These are the beliefs and reactions running underneath your day, usually installed early, usually as protection. They don't announce themselves. They just show up as "that's just how I am."

Try this: pick a reaction that feels bigger than the moment, and ask — "how old does this feel?" Not literally. Just notice what age the reaction has. That question often points straight at when the pattern was installed.

You're not a perfectionist. You're terrified of being caught not-enough.

You redo things nobody asked you to redo. Check what was already fine, twice, three times. Everyone calls it high standards. Most of the time, it's something else: somewhere, "good enough" started feeling like a countdown to being found out.

You don't aim for excellent. You aim for unattackable — because if it's flawless, nobody gets to criticize you. Perfectionism isn't about the work. It's about staying safe from the verdict.

Follow — I talk about the patterns underneath, not the symptoms.

Trying to "clear your mind" before bed is exactly what keeps you up.

"Think of nothing" is impossible — your brain fills silence with whatever's loudest, usually the thing you're anxious about. What actually works is the opposite: deliberately think of something random. A teacup. A bicycle. A cloud. Nothing connected, nothing important.

It's called cognitive shuffling, and it mimics what your brain naturally does right before sleep — too boring for anxiety to compete with.

You're not clearing your mind. You're just giving it somewhere quieter to go.

You can't break a pattern you can't see.

Most people try to change behavior before they've even named what's driving it. Step one of the SHIFT Framework isn't action — it's Self-Awareness: making the invisible visible, the triggers and automatic reactions that run your day before you've had a say in it.

Try this: next time you react strongly to something small, pause and ask "what did this actually touch?" Not what happened — what it touched. That question is where it starts.
