Bangladesh have rewritten a significant chapter in their Test cricket history, climbing three places to a career-best sixth in the ICC Test team rankings after a landmark tour of Australia.

The rise sees the Tigers leapfrog both Sri Lanka and Pakistan, with Bangladesh now occupying sixth place with 1,878 rating points. Sri Lanka have dropped to seventh with 1,222 points, while Pakistan remain eighth with 1,427 points.

Australia continue to rule the rankings table, holding on to top spot, followed by South Africa in second and New Zealand in third. India and England complete the top five in fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Bangladesh's stunning surge was fuelled by their historic nine-wicket triumph over Australia in the opening Test at Marrara Stadium. The victory marked the Tigers' first-ever Test win on Australian soil, underlining the significance of their campaign Down Under.

For Pakistan, however, the rankings movement comes at a difficult time.

The national side returned from the West Indies after salvaging a 1-1 draw in the two-Test series, but their fortunes took a sharp downturn in England. Pakistan suffered a crushing innings-and-103-run defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley in Leeds, putting them under immediate pressure in the series.

Bangladesh's rise, meanwhile, represents a major milestone for a side that has steadily strengthened its red-ball credentials and now finds itself firmly among the world's top six Test teams.

The ICC has unveiled a revamped format for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup, introducing two additional knockout matches while reducing the number of group-stage fixtures. The new structure will make its debut at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand in October and November 2028.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has handed the red-ball reins back to Babar Azam, naming the star batter as Pakistan's new Test captain on Sunday ahead of the upcoming tours of the West Indies and England.

Babar replaces opener Shan Masood, returning to a role he previously held between 2020 and 2023. During his first stint as Test captain, the 31-year-old led Pakistan in 20 matches, guiding the side to 10 victories, while suffering six defeats and playing out four draws.

Masood's tenure, meanwhile, comes to an end after 16 Tests in charge. Appointed in 2023 ahead of Pakistan's tour of Australia, he endured a difficult start with a 3-0 series whitewash before finishing his captaincy spell with four wins and 12 defeats, giving him a 25 per cent win rate.

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam has been sidelined from the opening Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh after suffering a left knee injury, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Thursday.

The 31-year-old will miss the first Test scheduled at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium from May 8 to 12, dealing a major setback to Pakistan’s top-order plans ahead of the series opener.

According to the PCB, Babar picked up the injury to his left knee and is currently under the supervision of the team’s medical panel. The board added that his condition is being closely monitored, with further updates on his fitness expected in due course.

"Pakistan batter Babar Azam will not be available for the first Test match against Bangladesh due to a injury in left knee," the PCB said in a statement.

"The team's medical panel is currently assessing his condition. Further updates will be shared in due course," it added.

Pakistan will now have to reshuffle their batting unit as they prepare to kick off the Test series without one of their most experienced and dependable run-scorers.
