THE POWER OF SPORTS: TRAINING THE BODY, HEALING THE MIND
Scientists continue to discover how consistent exercise can create positive changes in the brain. Beyond building strength and endurance, sports can help individuals manage stress, improve emotional control, and develop resilience after difficult experiences.
Basketball, athletics, and other sports are not only about competition β they are alternative courses of learning where young people develop discipline, teamwork, confidence, leadership, and the ability to overcome challenges.
Through sports, we teach lessons that cannot always be learned inside the classroom: how to handle pressure, respect others, stay committed, and rise after every setback.
A strong body builds a stronger mind.
A disciplined athlete becomes a disciplined person.
Investing in sports means investing in mental wellness, character development, and a better future for the next generation.
π§ A New Path to Healing
Physical activity is shifting from a fitness goal into a tool for changing how the brain handles painful past experiences. Recent findings show that regular exercise can soften the emotional charge of traumatic memories by altering the way the brain stores and retrieves them. The process involves the hippocampus and the amygdala, the regions tied to memory and emotion, working together to lower the intensity of triggers that once set off strong reactions.
π Rewiring the Emotional Response
The mechanism behind this effect comes down to specific proteins and a process called memory extinction. When people stick with consistent aerobic activity, the brain raises levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that supports the growth and reorganization of neurons. That biological shift lets the brain build new, safer associations with old memories, essentially overwriting the fear response that normally tags along with them.
π¬ The Science of Memory Extinction
The research points to several ways movement shapes the mind's ability to recover from the past.
* It encourages the growth of new neurons in the hippocampus, a region that tends to be smaller in people dealing with chronic stress or trauma.
* Exercise acts as a natural regulator for the nervous system, helping it manage the release of stress hormones like cortisol.
* Physical movement affects reconsolidation, the process where the brain pulls up a memory and then stores it again with less emotional weight.
πͺ Building Mental Resilience
To get these neurological benefits, consistency matters more than how hard you push. Running, swimming, or even brisk walking for thirty minutes a few times a week seems to deliver the most noticeable results for mental health. Sticking with a steady routine gives the brain the structural support it needs to move from constant high alert to a steadier state, one built on emotional stability and lasting resilience.

SALUTE TO OUR COACHES π¦
π
Sometimes we forget to thank the coaches who believed in us before we even believed in ourselves.
Behind every athleteβs growth is a coach who shared knowledge, corrected mistakes, pushed limits, and inspired us to become better players and better individuals.
They donβt just teach the game β they build confidence, discipline, character, and dreams.
To all coaches who continue to guide, sacrifice, and believe in their athletes: THANK YOU. ππ

FINAL DAY OF STUDENT BELONGINGS RETRIEVAL | August 25, 2026
To our dear parents and guardians:
The ADZU JHS will conduct the final day of Student Belongings Retrieval tomorrow, August 25, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN.
The cut-off for entry will be at 11:45 AM.
With only a minimal volume of remaining items for retrieval, an expedited verification process will be observed. Students are requested to inform their respective class moderators of the name of the parent or legal guardian who will retrieve their belongings tomorrow.
The names submitted to the moderators will still be subject to verification against the schoolβs official directory and records before retrieval is allowed.
We respectfully ask parents and legal guardians to continue observing the schoolβs established security, verification, and orderly movement procedures throughout the activity.
As this will be the last scheduled day for retrieval, we encourage those who still have belongings in school to make the necessary arrangements within the prescribed time.
For any further concerns, clarifications, or assistance regarding the retrieval of student belongings, please course all communications through the official Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School page by sending us a direct message.
