Alex Eala is Wimbledon-Ready!

Alex Eala will begin her Wimbledon Championships campaign as a seeded player against World. No.76 Renata Zarauza in the first round tonight, June 29.

The two previously faced off at the WTA 100 North Carolina event in 2024, where she defeated Eala in their first encounter. The filipina tennis standout looks to bounce back and advance in the round of 128.

Ahead of the competition, she shared the mindset she believes is essential for Wimbledon.

"I definitely think you need to have the mindset, especially in the slam, that you can beat anyone. But then you also need to remember that anyone can beat you. So it really, it goes both ways. I like to say that tennis is a gladiator sport…" she said.

Eala will enter the tournament as the first-ever seeded filipina tennis player, cementing her in the history of Philippine tennis.

Choose Sports, Not Violence πŸ€βš½

Youth violence often starts when young people are left without direction, purpose, or opportunity. Sports offer a powerful alternative.

Through sports, the youth learn discipline, teamwork, respect, and resilienceβ€”values that keep them focused on growth instead of conflict. Courts and fields become safe spaces where energy is released positively, and coaches become mentors who guide them toward better choices.

Every training session keeps a young person away from the streets. Every game builds confidence, character, and hope.

Invest in sports. Support the youth.
Because strong communities are built when we choose play over violence and dreams over destruction. πŸ’ͺπŸ‡΅πŸ‡

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) remains steadfast in its mandate to safeguard the welfare of our athletes and ensure the unhindered development of Philippine sports.

With this commitment, the POC has officially stepped up to supervise and manage the national volleyball teams for all upcoming major international campaigns. Under the leadership of POC President Abraham β€œBambol” Tolentino and Secretary-General Atty. Wharton Chan, the POC has finalized and locked in the masterplan for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya 20th Asian Games.

Front and center of this national campaign is the country's rising volleyball star, Bella Belen, who headlines a stacked and deeply talented Alas Pilipinas Women’s pool. To steer our women's squad toward continental success, the POC has officially reappointed Japanese head coach Takayuki Minowa.

On the men's side, international tactician Angiolino Frigoni has been reappointed as head coach to lead a powerhouse Alas Pilipinas Men's squad. Both coaching appointments will take effect on July 1 and run through October 15.

To ensure our national athletes are fully equipped with the world-class support they deserve, the POC is working in close coordination with the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), through its President Ricky Palou and Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo, to guarantee absolute logistical and competitive backing for the women's squad. Furthermore, the POC has given the coaching staff complete free will to finalize the tournament's 12-player roster for each team from the pools below:

PBA Governors’ Cup tips off July 10 with new rules aligned closer to FIBA

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup will open on July 10 with new rules and a competition format aimed at delivering a more exciting finish to the league’s Golden Anniversary season.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said the updated rules will bring the league closer to International Basketball Federation (FIBA) standards, while retaining select β€œhouse rules” such as 12-minute quarters, six personal fouls for disqualification, six team fouls to penalty, and the four-point shot.

Marcial explained that the near-alignment with FIBA rules is part of the PBA’s commitment to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and Gilas Pilipinas.

To support the transition, FIBA Level 1 instructor Mohammad Al-Amiri of Kuwait will be in Manila from June 27 to July 2 to conduct workshops, seminars, and training sessions. Al-Amiri, a referee since 1994, was one of four Asian officials assigned to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Among the new PBA rules are:

Only one coaches’ challenge per team, whether successful or not

Use of the possession arrow after the opening jump ball

Clear classification of unsportsmanlike and disqualifying fouls

Removal of transition take, advantage, and deliberate foul distinctions, now all under unsportsmanlike fouls

Reversion to FIBA penalty rules in the final two minutes of every quarter

The changes are expected to enhance game flow while preparing players and officials for international competition. πŸ€

Do these rule changes make the Governors’ Cup more competitive compared to previous seasons?
