Baguio City- Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio recently inspected the ongoing construction of the artificial football pitch at the PSC facility inside Teachers’ Camp, Baguio City, as the agency pushes to ensure that the project is completed on schedule.

The project is a joint initiative of the PSC and the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) aimed at strengthening grassroots football and providing athletes with a modern, all-weather training and competition facility.

The facility will feature a polyethylene synthetic turf with silica sand and rubber or SBR infill. The project also includes drainage, grading, base-course preparation and compaction, football goals, corner flags, perimeter fencing, and turf-maintenance equipment.

During his inspection, Gregorio expressed confidence that the artificial football pitch will be completed before the end of the year.

The new facility is expected to strengthen Baguio’s position as a venue for major football activities, including national competitions. The PSC is also coordinating with the Department of Education for possible additional facilities such as bleachers that can accommodate 2,000 spectators.

Baguio City – Young Filipino motorsport standout Iñigo Anton added another milestone to his racing career after securing a remarkable podium finish in the debut race of the new Proton S70 race car in the top-tier class of the Malaysian Touring Car Championship (MTCC) at the Sepang International Circuit.

Representing the Philippines on the international stage, Anton teamed up with co-driver Azriel Azhar behind the wheel of the newly developed Proton S70 race car, fielded by Axle Motorsport and founded by former Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong. Backed by Motul, the multi-titled young champion proved his world-class adaptability by taking the brand-new touring car straight to the podium on its very first competitive weekend.

Re-engineered and built under the guidance of Axle Motorsport with full technical backing from Proton, the Proton S70 race car features a powerful 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine tailored for top-flight competition. Marking its competitive debut, the car faced an intense test against seasoned competitors in the premier MT1600 class.

Despite being a completely new machine making its racing bow, it demonstrated incredible consistency, pace, and mechanical reliability throughout the weekend.

Coached and guided by former F1 driver Alex Yoong, Anton has continued to blossom into one of Southeast Asia's most formidable racers. Under Yoong's expert mentorship at Axle Motorsport, Anton's precise car control and race-craft enabled the team to unlock vital data for the car's ongoing development toward upcoming endurance challenges, such as the Sepang 1000km held this coming weekend.

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and StB GigaFactory, Inc. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore and advance renewable energy generation, energy storage systems, and e-mobility solutions across New Clark City and other BCDA-managed developments.

The strategic partnership aims to establish a modern, resilient, and clean energy ecosystem designed to power future-ready industries through cleaner energy integration, grid reliability, and sustainable mobility infrastructure.

Under the 12-month agreement, BCDA will grant site access, supply key project data, and provide administrative assistance. In turn, StB GigaFactory will conduct comprehensive site surveys, technical feasibility studies, and financial modeling to formulate actionable recommendations for clean energy deployment.

"Partnering with StB GigaFactory aligns directly with our vision to make New Clark City a model of sustainable, high-tech urban development," said BCDA President and CEO Joshua M. Bingcang. "By integrating cutting-edge energy storage and clean mobility solutions into our master plan, we are building a resilient infrastructure framework that empowers industries, protects the environment, and drives long-term economic growth."

The collaboration leverages New Clark City’s growing prominence as a hub for advanced technology and clean energy. Located at the Filinvest Innovation Park in New Clark City, StB GigaFactory is the Philippines’ first manufacturing plant for Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cells and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

By combining BCDA’s industrial land development platforms with StB GigaFactory’s localized energy storage technology, the partnership demonstrates how utility-scale renewables, energy storage, and electric mobility can be seamlessly scaled.

The StB GigaFactory, Inc. has already created jobs for 500 Filipinos , with plans to grow its workforce to 2,500 by 2030.

This initiative directly supports the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., which prioritizes strengthening national energy security, accelerating the transition toward renewable power, enhancing climate resilience, and building sustainable infrastructure for future generations.

The signing was attended by StB GigaFactory, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Dennis C. Ibarra, StB GigaFactory, Inc. Business Development Manager Ruth G. Butalid, and BCDA Vice President for Investment Promotions and Marketing Department Erwin Kenneth R. Peralta.

The Benguet-Nueva Vizcaya Road in Beckel, La Trinidad, Benguet is totally impassable after a large portion of the two-lane roadway collapsed following days of continuous rain.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon and regional DPWH officials inspected the damaged section on August 21. The area has been heavily barricaded as thick fog further reduces visibility and poses additional risks to motorists and road workers.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes until further notice.

Baguio City- A perfect sweep in two endurance races highlighted Mark Young Racing x Motul x Yokohama Racing Team’s dominant showing in the Kagitingan Endurance Cup, taking the top spot in the Overall, Class 1 and Open A categories in both the 4-hour and 8-hour races at the Batangas Racing Circuit on August 8-9, 2026.

Adding to the team’s impressive campaign were Baguio City father-and-son duo Carlos and Inigo Anton, who shared driving duties with Karol Collantes and Marky Young aboard the Mark Young Racing #888 Honda Civic EG. The Antons, both natives and residents of Baguio City, helped the team overcome challenging wet-track conditions.

The team secured P1 Overall, P1 Class 1 and P1 Open A in both endurance races.

BAGUIO CITY — Filipino martial artists delivered a strong showing in the international arena, bringing home a total of 20 medals—four gold, seven silver, and nine bronze—at the International Sport Kickboxing Association (ISKA) Asia Pacific Championship 2026 – Elite Invitational Tournament held in Sanya, China, from August 5 to 9, 2026.

Representing the Philippines, athletes from the Excalibur Fight Team competed in various categories and disciplines, including Muay Thai, K-1, Wushu Sanda, No-Gi, and Point Fighting.

Leading the Philippine medal haul was Sharma Devaiah, who captured the gold medal in No-Gi (Tatami), -55kg Senior category. She also secured three silver medals in LC, K-1, and K-1 Light, giving her a total of four medals in the tournament.

Gerwin Lete added another gold medal for the Philippines after ruling the Wushu Sanda (Ring), -55kg Under-18 division. He also won a silver medal in K-1 Light and two bronze medals in K-1 and FC. Lete likewise competed as the ISKA 55kg Youth Title Challenger.

Meanwhile, Gregory Mamuad emerged with two gold medals after topping the PF and LC (Tatami), -55kg Under-16 division. He added two silver medals in K-1 and K-1 Light.

Jhay Shareezer B. Gayman contributed a silver medal in Muay Thai and a bronze in Point Fighting in the -40kg Under-12 category.

Neil James Calabias added three bronze medals after competing in K-1, Muay Thai, and K-1 Light in the -60kg Under-18 division.

The Philippine Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) Team struck gold at the 2026 OCR World Championship on August 9, in Limerick, Ireland, capturing the gold medal in the Mixed 30+ 400-meter Race.

The Filipino racers clocked 2 minutes and 18 seconds to secure the championship, beating the United States, which posted 2:29.601, and Canada, which finished at 2:52.746, in the finals.

Leading the Philippine charge were SEA Games gold medalists Sandi Menchi Abahan and Marites Nocyao, who helped deliver the country’s impressive victory on the world stage.

In a Facebook post, Abahan thanked everyone who supported the team and cheered for them from back home.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us and cheered us on back home. There’s so much more to share about this race, but I’ll save the stories for when I get home.”

Many of the group's members first learned to play music at Bahay Pag-asa Home and School for the Blind, where they discovered not only the beauty of the Philippine rondalla but also the confidence, friendships, and sense of purpose that music can bring.

When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their lives in 2020, many members lost their livelihood as massage therapists. Faced with uncertainty, they returned to the music that had always connected them. What began as online performances to uplift people's spirits soon grew into something much bigger, a shared mission to keep Filipino music alive while creating new opportunities for visually impaired musicians.

With borrowed instruments and the support of generous individuals, the group slowly found its way back to performing. From online concerts to busking along Session Road, their music touched audiences who not only enjoyed their performances but also admired the resilience behind every note.

Today, SM City Baguio proudly provides the Philippine Rondalla Serenata with a space where they can continue sharing their music with the community. Every weekend, their performances transform an ordinary mall visit into a meaningful experience, allowing shoppers to enjoy timeless Filipino melodies while celebrating the incredible talent of local musicians.

Beyond giving the group greater visibility, performing regularly at SM City Baguio has also become an important source of livelihood for its members. Every scheduled performance provides a meaningful opportunity to earn while doing what they love most. MANKAYAN, Benguet — Crescent Mining Development Corp. (CMDC) has maintained that it has complied with government regulations and Indigenous Peoples’ rights requirements for nearly three decades in pursuing its Mineral Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA) covering 533.4 hectares in Mankayan.

It is also the same position echoed by several respected elders in the municipality.

Elders attest to consultation process

Former Mankayan mayor and council elder Materno Luspian said he was among the validated indigenous elders and the assigned spokesperson of the Council of Elders of the Mankayan Ancestral Domain who witnessed the company’s engagement with stakeholders in securing permits and approvals for exploration drilling in the municipality, including barangays Bulalacao and Guinaoang, where opposition to the project has been strongest.

According to Luspian, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) conducted a field-based investigation to determine the Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) and Indigenous Peoples (IPs) affected by the project as part of the FPIC process.

He said the validated elders, Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representatives (IPMRs), Indigenous Peoples and other stakeholders participated in the Free Prior and Informed Process.

Issues concerning the MPSA were also discussed during two general community assemblies and several community meetings, where CMDC assured participants that exploration drilling would not proceed without first securing the necessary permits and completing the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) process and obtain a Certification Precondition required under the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA).

Luspian also invoked the Cordilleran cultural value of “inayan,” which he described as comparable to the Golden Rule, in urging political leaders, indigenous elders and other concerned groups to avoid spreading misinformation and disinformation regarding the exploration project.
“We (members of the council of elders) conducted a “sapata” before and after we (IP elders) signed the memorandum of agreement with CMDC. The company too has shown their sincerity not only during the FPIC process but in the last two decades that they were here in Mankayan,” Luspian said.

In the Cordilleran context, “sapata” is best understood as a sacred oath or pact accompanied by a self-imposed curse if the oath is false, rather than simply an affidavit or legal statement.

FPIC questioned by project opponents

Following the NCIP-facilitated FPIC process, CMDC signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Mankayan Ancestral Domain represented by their designated elders and a Certification Precondition (CP) was issued by the NCIP, documents which, the company says,demonstrate its compliance with IPRA requirements.

But several residents and advocacy groups continue to question the validity of the FPIC process, alleging that many affected indigenous residents were excluded from or were inadequately consulted during the proceedings.

But CMDC maintained that during the sessions of the NCIP Commission En Banc, a further validation on the FPIC’s process was conducted and it concluded that the process was in compliance with prescribed guidelines.

Meanwhile, the dispute prompted some residents of Bulalacao and Guinaoang to block a public road to prevent the entry of CMDC’s drilling equipment into the exploration area.

Last month, there was talk that some landowners withdrewtheir consent for exploration activities on their properties

However, no affected landowners have personally approached CMDC to withdraw from their agreements with CMDC to date.

CMDC denies open-pit mining claims

CMDC has rejected claims circulating on social media that it intends to develop an open-pit mine within the MPSA area, stressing that its current activities are limited solely to mineral exploration drilling.

The company said that while the MPSA covers more than 500 hectares, actual drilling will be confined to specific target areas identified through geological studies covering a maximum of 50 hectares.

It added that no mining operation has been proposed at this stage.

Watershed study cited

CMDC likewise disputed allegations that exploration drilling would deplete water sources serving nearby communities and farms.

Instead, a company official cited a study by Dr. Cirilo Lagman Jr. of Benguet State University, which links watershed degradation and declining agricultural productivity in parts of Mankayan, particularly in Barangays Balili and Bulalacao, to the continued expansion of commercial vegetable farming into forested watershed areas.

According to the study, converting forested watersheds into agricultural land increases irrigation demand while disrupting the natural hydrologic cycle responsible for groundwater recharge. It recommends protecting and restoring forest cover while adopting soil and water conservation measures to ensure long-term water security.

The research further emphasized the importance of mossy forests in sustaining the hydrologic cycle by trapping atmospheric moisture, promoting rainwater infiltration, and replenishing underground aquifers.

CMDC said it has documented areas in Bulalacao where forest cover has been converted into commercial vegetable farms.

CMDC annually plants more than 6,000 tree seedlings in partnership with host communities and the municipal LGU.

Court battle continues

The company has sought judicial relief before Branch 64 of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Benguet after access to the exploration site remained blocked despite their efforts to reach out to the opposing party to come to an agreement. CMDC declined to comment further, citing the pending court proceedings.

Earlier, RTC Branch 62 issued a 72-hour Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) directing protesters to refrain from blocking access roads to allow the company to transport exploration equipment.

National government monitoring situation

The national government is also monitoring developments in Mankayan. Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla met with Mankayan Mayor Cesar Pasiwen and the barangay officials of Bulalacao and Guinaoang in Baguio City to discuss the situation earlier this year.

During the meeting, Remulla discussed the position of the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), which recommended lifting the municipal government’s suspension order against CMDC.

ARTA said its recommendation is anchored on Republic Act No. 11032, or the Ease of Doing Business and Efficient Government Service Delivery Act of 2018, which seeks to prevent unnecessary delays, redundant requirements and unauthorized government restrictions that impede lawful business activities.
