Young Vipers Continue to Rise as Lloyd Phillip Delivers Match-Winning Performance.
———————————————

The Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers' commitment to developing young talent continues to pay dividends, with teenage ho**er Lloyd Phillip announcing himself as one of the competition's brightest emerging prospects after producing a match-winning performance in Round 12 of the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup.

The 19-year-old was named Man of the Match after helping the Vipers secure a hard fought 12-8 victory over Gulf Isou at the weekend.

With both teams deadlocked at 8-8 in a fiercely contested encounter, Phillip displayed the confidence and instinct of a seasoned first grader. Spotting an opportunity around the ruck, the young ho**er exploded from dummy half, slicing through the Isou defence before diving over for the decisive try that ultimately sealed the win for the Vipers.

Phillip, who hails from Porgera in Enga Province, is currently balancing his rugby league career with his education as a Grade 11 student at Badihagwa Technical Secondary School. His dedication both on and off the field has been evident throughout the season.

Only weeks ago, Phillip was representing the Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers Under-19 side in the National Youth Competition (NYC), helping the team reach the Grand Final. His consistent performances at youth level caught the attention of the senior coaching staff, earning him his Digicel ExxonMobil Cup debut in Round 11 against the Kandes in Madang.

Just one game into his senior career, Phillip has already shown that he belongs at the top level. His courage, speed around the ruck, defensive work rate and ability to read the game have impressed teammates, coaches and supporters alike.

For Head Coach Wellington Albert, Phillip's performance is another example of why he has remained committed to giving young players opportunities at the highest level.

Despite the physical demands and intensity of the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, Albert has shown unwavering belief in the club's youth pathway, trusting players who have earned their chance through hard work, discipline and strong performances in the junior ranks.

Throughout the season, Albert has continued to promote emerging players into the senior squad, believing that exposing them to first-grade rugby league is vital for both their personal development and the long-term success of the club.

His philosophy centres on creating a sustainable future for the Port Moresby Vipers by building a squad that combines experienced campaigners with fearless young talent.

"Lloyd's performance is exactly what we want to see from our young players," Albert said.

"He has worked hard throughout the season, earned his opportunity and showed great composure under pressure. We have confidence in our young squad because they've put in the work. Our responsibility as coaches is to prepare them well and back them when they're ready."

Albert added that success is not built overnight, but through investing in players who embrace the club's culture and are willing to learn.

"Our young boys have shown they're capable of competing at this level. Every week they're growing in confidence and understanding what first-grade football demands. They're the future of this club, and it's exciting to watch them develop."

Phillip's rise through the Vipers pathway also demonstrates the strength of the NYC program, where talented young players are identified, nurtured and provided with a genuine pathway from junior representative football into the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup.

Spiders Sting Bulldogs to Advance in Rigo Rice Cup Top 8 Playoffs.

TST Spiders delivered a commanding performance to defeat M3 Bulldogs 22-8 in the fourth leg of the Rigo Rice Cup Season 2 Top 8 playoffs, keeping their championship aspirations alive.

The Spiders entered the contest determined to make a statement and did just that, controlling key moments of the match against a resilient Bulldogs outfit from Morota.

Leading the way for TST Spiders was former Port Moresby Vipers lock forward Maya Clark, whose experience and leadership proved invaluable throughout the encounter. Clark's strong defensive efforts and ball-running ability provided the platform for the Spiders to dominate possession and field position.

At the back, fullback Rocky Joe was the standout performer of the afternoon. Joe showcased his attacking brilliance by crossing the try line twice, causing constant headaches for the Bulldogs' defence with his speed, footwork and support play.

Despite trailing for most of the match, M3 Bulldogs continued to fight hard and managed to put points on the board, but they were unable to contain the Spiders' attacking threats.

The 22-8 victory sees TST Spiders strengthen their position in the Top 8 playoffs as they continue their pursuit of the Rigo Rice Cup Season 2 title.

Agmark East Sepik School Rugby League Finals Series Confirmed.

The Agmark East Sepik School Rugby League competition is entering an exciting stage of the 2026 season, with finals formats now confirmed across all divisions as teams prepare for their championship campaigns.

As it stands, all Under 17 Boys and Under 18 Girls teams will progress directly to the Semi Finals. The format will mirror the successful structure used during the inaugural Under 19 competition last season, ensuring every qualifying team has an opportunity to compete for a place in the Grand Final.

The Under 19 competition will begin its Top 8 Finals Series in Week One of Term Three. The top four ranked teams will receive a double-chance advantage, while teams placed fifth to eighth will face immediate elimination matches.

Under the finals format, the winners from the bottom four elimination matches will advance to face the losers from the top four qualifying matches. The winners of the top four clashes will move directly into the qualifying finals and await their opponents. Teams defeated in the bottom four elimination matches will conclude their 2026 season.

The Under 17 Boys and Under 18 Girls Semi Finals will be played during the same weekend as the Under 19 qualifying finals, creating a thrilling period of school rugby league action across the province. Both divisions will then contest their Grand Finals the following week.

Meanwhile, the Primary Schools divisions will also reach a crucial stage of the competition. The Under 12 and Under 15 divisions will complete their remaining round matches in Week One before proceeding directly into their Semi Finals during the same finals weekend.

The season will culminate with a historic Grand Final weekend, where champions will be crowned across all divisions of the Agmark East Sepik School Rugby League competition.

Players, schools, families, and supporters can look forward to an action-packed finals series as the best school rugby league talent in East Sepik battles for premiership glory and the opportunity to be crowned 2026 champions.
