The strong partnership between Police and City Safe has again delivered positive results, with a Balaclava-clad shoplifter arrested within minutes of allegedly stealing from a Whangārei jewellery store.

At about 12.30pm on 24 June, a man entered a Cameron Street retail store wearing a balaclava and allegedly removed a pair of earrings before leaving without paying.

Whangārei-Kaipara Area Commander Inspector Maria Nordstrom says a member of the public witnessed the incident and immediately alerted City Safe officers.

"City Safe staff quickly relayed the information to Police officers who were carrying out one of their regular foot patrols through the Cameron Street Mall.

"Because of the strong working relationship between Police and City Safe, officers were able to respond immediately, identify the suspect and track his movements."

Police located the man a short distance away and arrested him before he was able to enter his vehicle.

The stolen earrings were recovered and returned. A subsequent search of the man's bag also located cannabis.

Inspector Nordstrom says the incident highlights the value of the close partnership between Police, City Safe and the community.

"This was a fantastic example of everyone working together to achieve a positive outcome. A vigilant member of the public reported what they saw, City Safe acted quickly to pass on information, and nearby Police staff were able to respond immediately.

"City Safe personnel are an important part of the safety network in central Whangārei. They provide valuable information, maintain a visible presence in the CBD and are often our eyes and ears on the ground.

"Our strong relationship means information is shared quickly, allowing us to intervene early and prevent offending from escalating."

Inspector Nordstrom says retail crime remains a priority for Police.

"We know the impact shoplifting and retail crime has on businesses and staff.

“Police will continue to hold offenders to account and work closely with our partners to keep our retail areas safe."

A 23-year-old man has been referred to Te Pae Oranga in relation to shoplifting and possession of cannabis.
