OBU Junior Rugby is the new home of junior rugby in Wellington’s western and central suburbs.

Built on the proud traditions of Wests Rugby and Old Boys University, we’re creating something special for the next generation of young players.

Yesterday our Y8 Roosters had the privilege of playing the Thomas Murray Shield, commemorating Thomas Murray — a Wests Junior, Wellington College student and OBU player whose connection to the game stretched across both clubs.

We were honoured to be joined by George Murray, who spoke to the players before kick-off about Thomas and his love of rugby, setting the tone for a special afternoon.

To commemorate the occasion, and the shared history behind this special fixture, our Roosters donned the Wests Blue for the final time in their junior rugby journey.

The match was played in a fantastic festival atmosphere and in great spirits, with plenty of running rugby and some outstanding tries from both sides.

The Roosters punched above their weight, showing plenty of skill and determination. Some hard-nosed forward play created opportunities, and when they came, they were good enough to take them.

The Wellington College U55s showed exactly why they are champions this year. Their quality ultimately told, with Wellington College taking home the victory and the Thomas Murray Shield.

But the result was only part of the occasion. This was the final fixture for our Year 8s and the last time they would take the field together as junior rugby players. It was a fitting way to finish their journey — bringing together two teams connected to Thomas, celebrating his love of rugby, and giving our Roosters one final opportunity to play alongside their mates.

A huge thank you to Wellington College, George Murray, the players, coaches, officials and everyone who came along and helped make the afternoon what it was.

We look forward to welcoming Wellington College back next year and continuing this traditional fixture.

26/08/2026

This weekend marks the final round of the 2026 junior rugby season, and we’d love to see plenty of OBU support around the grounds as our teams pull on the hoops one more time.

It’s been a huge season for our players, coaches, managers, referees, volunteers and whānau — and this weekend is a chance to finish it together.

Then on Sunday, the celebrations continue with a very special fixture:

🏆 Thomas Murray Shield
🐐 OBU Year 8 Roosters vs Wellington College U55
📅 Sunday 30 August
⏰ 1:30pm
📍 Ian Galloway Park — The Cage

The Thomas Murray Shield is a special part of our rugby history. Thomas Murray was a Wests Junior, Wellington College student and OBU Scallwag, making this a particularly fitting fixture as our Year 8s close out their junior rugby journey.

Prizegiving will follow immediately after the Thomas Murray Shield, so stick around as we celebrate the season, recognise our players and teams, and bring the 2026 junior rugby season to a close together.

We’d love to see plenty of green and white, and Wests blue, on the sideline across the weekend.

Lets finish the season strong!!🐐💚🤍

🐐 PACK THE CAGE!

We’re sending our 2026 Year 8s off with a special final club occasion — the Thomas Murray Shield Challenge against Wellington College U55.

📅 Sunday 30 August
⏰ 1:30pm
📍 Ian Galloway Park — The Cage

The Thomas Murray Shield honours Thomas “T-Muzz” Murray, a former Wests Junior, Wellington College student and OBU Scallywag, and the energy, friendship and love of rugby he brought to the game. OBU Juniors is proud to continue that tradition, giving our departing Year 8s the opportunity to honour him and those values in their final junior rugby fixture.

For this special game, our Year 8s will don the Wests jersey for the final time in their junior rugby journey — a fitting nod to where they started and the legacy they carry forward.

We’d love to see plenty of green and white, and blue on the sideline, making some noise and getting behind the team.

Then it’s straight on to Prizegiving to finish the season together.

Pack the Cage. Back the Boys. Honour the legacy.
