Game 1 VS Cambridge: report by Aaron Mudford
To start off the Galletly Cup he tournament we played Cambridge High School 2nd XI. The game began positive with the team applying constant pressure in the attacking circle. This pressure paid off when Caleb received the ball at the top of the circle and found the bottom corner of the net to secure the team’s first goal. The team continued to create opportunities and were rewarded with another goal when Baxter was found in space and calmly slotted the ball for the second goal of the quarter. With opportunities continuing to arise, Cody managed to finish off the quarter with another goal, giving the team a 3-0 lead.
The second quarter saw a drop in the team’s performance with Cambridge lifting their intensity. While soaking up pressure, the team continued to move the ball around the turf well but struggled to create clear opportunities in the circle. Despite this the team defended well to hold their 3-0 lead into half time.
The third quarter was similar to the second, with the team struggling to convert opportunities into goals. Multiple penalty corners were earned, but the team were unable to convert them. Cambridge continued to challenge the team, but our defence remained strong and we maintained the score.
Going into the final quarter the team’s focus was on creating more outcomes in the circle . This was achieved early in the quarter when Toby found the backboard after a great passage of play, to extend the lead to 4-0. Cambridge responded by scoring their first goal of the match bringing the score to 4-1. The team continued putting the Cambridge goalkeeper under pressure but were unable to find the net. Eventually, Joseph was found in the circle and calmly found the back of the net, increasing the scoreline to 5-1.
The final whistle confirmed a strong 5-1 opening victory for the team, giving them an ideal start to the tournament. While the scoreline was strong there were plenty of learning opportunities to take in. Up next the team take on Wellington College
