Mental Fitness Toolkit | Series 02: Goal Setting

I’ve struggled in the past because my goals were too vague

“I want to run faster”
“I want to try something new”
“I want to surf more”

Intentions like these are a good starting point, but they don’t tell us what action to take next

One of the most effective psychological skills used by athletes is goal setting

Not because goals magically create success, but because they provide direction, focus, and motivation

Research consistently shows that goals are most effective when they are specific and linked to behaviours we can control

Instead of focusing only on outcomes, try identifying the process that will help you get there

Outcome Goal:
Run a half marathon

Process Goal:
Run three times per week

Small actions repeated consistently often outperform bursts of motivation

This week, ask yourself:
What is one goal I’m working towards?
And what is the next small action I can take?

Keen to hear your answer below

📚 Wellbeing Wednesday | KEEP LEARNING

Some of the best lessons I’ve learned haven’t come from a classroom

They’ve come from conversations with clients, getting lost on a trail, reading a book that challenged my thinking, or trying something new and realising I didn’t have all the answers

Learning isn’t just about gaining knowledge

It’s about staying curious

Curiosity helps us adapt, grow and see the world through a different lens. It reminds us that we’re never truly “finished” and that every experience has something to teach us

Research suggests that lifelong learning supports cognitive health, resilience and confidence while providing opportunities to grow through challenge

Whether it’s reading a few pages of a book, listening to a podcast on your commute, learning a new skill, or asking a different question, every small step counts

This week’s challenge:

What’s one thing you’ve been meaning to learn?

Give it a go

You probably spend a fair bit of time training your body…

But how often do you train your mind?

Psychological Skills Training (PST) involves learning and practising mental skills that can improve focus, confidence, resilience, emotional regulation, and performance

While these tools are often associated with elite athletes, they’re just as valuable for everyday athletes, runners, hikers, surfers, gym-goers, and anyone working towards a meaningful goal
Just like physical fitness, mental fitness can be developed through consistent practice

Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing practical, evidence-informed psych skills that you can start using immediately to support both performance and wellbeing

We’ll explore:

🎯 Goal Setting
🧠 Self-Talk
👁️ Imagery
🌊 Relaxation & Breathing
🧘 Mindfulness
🔍 Attention Control
💪 Confidence

As both a Mental Health Clinician and Personal Trainer, I’m fascinated by the connection between mental and physical wellbeing. This series is designed to help bridge the gap between the two.

Which mental skill would make the biggest difference to your training or everyday life right now?

Let me know in the comments.

SHIN SPLINTS? TRY THESE 3 THINGS TO REDUCE YOUR RISK

Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) are one of the most common running and walking injuries, especially when load increases faster than the body can adapt.

The good news: they’re often a warning sign, not the end.

Most cases come down to one thing… too much impact, too soon.

Try this approach:

👟 Footwear
Support your foot mechanics and replace worn-out shoes when needed.

⚡ Cadence
Shorter, quicker steps reduce braking forces through the shin.

💪 Strength
Build resilient calves and lower legs to better absorb impact.

Small adjustments can make a big difference in keeping you moving well and staying consistent with training.

If pain is sharp, worsening, or persistent, get it checked early.

🌊 World Ocean Day 🌊

I’ve recently read Blue Mind by Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, and it’s given me a deeper appreciation for something I’ve felt for yonks

Water changes the way we feel

Nichols describes “Blue Mind” as a mildly meditative state we experience when we’re in, on, under, or near water. A state associated with calm, clarity, creativity and connection

For me, that’s always made sense

Whether it’s surfing, swimming in a lake, sitting beside a river, or simply listening to the ocean, water has a way of slowing things down and bringing me back to the present moment

In a world that often feels fast, noisy and demanding, the ocean offers something different

On World Ocean Day, it’s worth remembering that our oceans are more than just places for recreation. They support life, inspire adventure, and provide countless people with a sense of wellbeing and connection

So today, if you get the chance, spend a few moments near the water

Notice how it makes you feel

🌊 What does the ocean mean to you?
