When we talk about drama, as opposed to musical theatre or singing in general, people just entering this space often don't realize that our voices are our core instrument. With this in mind, vocal warm-ups before we dive into the weird and wonderful world of drama and acting are such an important step.

Whole-body stretches and vocal exercises help our voices to move more freely, loosen up the muscles that help us to control breath, projection, & pitch, while giving us a wonderful opportunity to become better acquainted with each section of our instrument.

We will spend time feeling the difference between lower belly, diaphragm, chest, throat, and head voices. Breathing exercises, noise mapping, and really get a handle on how to control our voices to make them work for us.

HOMEWORK...
Just for fun, I challenge you all to spend a few minutes each day "moving" your voice between your tummy, chest, throat, and head.

You don't need to strain your voice at all, as using a simple hum will be more than enough for you to track where you "feel" it resonating.

Using your hand to almost direct your voice into different parts of the body can be very helpful! Some people prefer to push their voice around with their hands, while others prefer to pull it where they want it using a pinching and pulling gesture.

Play around with it, as the more often you do it, the better at it you will get!

BONUS lung capacity exercises!

This is one you can do with your whole family!

Simply stand at one end of a room, take in a nice deep breath through your nose as you count to 4, hold for 4, then slowly blow it out (controlled) of your mouth with slightly pursed lips for a count of 8. Imagine you are trying to get the stream of air to reach the wall at the other end of the room (Don't blow with force).

When blowing out for 8 gets too easy. Incrementally increase the count to 10, 12, and beyond.

The driving force behind Abbey Road is the passion and desire to ignite a love for performing arts in the hearts and minds of as many people as possible so that love may continue to be passed on for generations to come!

When I was a child, I had a lot of issues with bullying at school. I have always been quite introverted and spent a lot of time by myself, until I discovered the magic of theatre school, and how it changed my world for every moment I was in it!!

Whether attending weekly lessons, or being part of a pantomime or musical cast, I could let down my walls, feel immersed in what makes me most happy, supported in my creativity and love for movement and storytelling!!

When you step out of environments that aren’t supportive of your passions, and into a world where you are immersed in likeminded and celebrated artistic wonder, you can finally relax and be your authentic self! This prompts healthy development, an understanding of your individual potential, and happiness unmatched in any other environment!

We want this for as many people as we can bring into this space, no matter your age, experience, or personality type, especially our young people who are literally the torch bearers for the continuation of all performing arts.

With that being said, we would love to invite you all to share our page and posts with anyone and everyone you know, so that we may open the stage door to all those who may be too shy or too busy to think about seeking it out for themselves!

For anyone wanting to enter the weird and wonderful word of amateur dramatics, my advice would be to read anything and everything you can, to observe people and their interactions whenever and wherever possible and spend some time each day in front of the mirror practicing a simple line in different “moods” so you can build on your ability to move between emotions and feelings at will.
“What do you mean?”
“I wasn’t aware you were there”
“Why do you keep saying that?”
“He’s lost it”
“I wouldn’t do that” etc… or choose your own.

Make sure to pay extra attention to your facial expressions, they are just as important as verbal communication. Most importantly though…have fun with it! Abbey Road Academy of Performing Arts NZ

Wowee….well sometimes life really does take you on unexpected journeys that cause temporary humps, bumps and delays, but if we ride the wave, we always end up right back where we belong.

We have had quite a few unexpected hiccups on our launch journey as many of you would’ve noticed, and it’s been a fairly exhausting and infuriating path BUT…finally the kinks have been unkinked, the humps and bumps flattened out and the show WILL go on 😉 finally.

We have had to adjust our initial class options to BEGINNER DRAMA only initially, but we are working on expanding to dance and more in the very near future.

We are going to be offering 3 upcoming sample evenings for all of our age groups to attend, with opportunities for early bird enrolments for term 4, pre-order uniforms, a peek into what’s coming next and a whole heap of laughter and fun!

I will be chucking up a registration form shortly as we do need to somewhat limit attendee numbers so we don’t end up like sardines, but with the option of three evenings, we should have space for everyone to get a taste of what we will be offering.

Anyone and everyone who attends one of our sample evenings and ends the night with formally enrolling themselves or children for our term 4 classes will get an exclusive entry into our prize pack which will include a gift card for term 4 classes, free branded unform items, merch and more!!!

Sample evenings will we on Wednesdays (dates will be confirmed shortly)

6pm 5-12yrs (one adult per family please)

7pm 13-17yrs (no adults required, though we may have space for limited numbers)

8pm 18+ for our adult groups (18+, 35+, women only)

** Registration for attendance is essential for health & safety reasons.

UPDATE;
Hello all you amazing humans…firstly I’d like to apologise for falling off the face of the earth momentarily. We’ve had a series of family events happen in very quick succession, so we’ve been going through the motions of each of those events.

Some of you were expecting our classes to kick off at the start of term 2, but due to such low numbers it was sadly not financially viable to start when we had hoped so I have made some adjustments to upcoming classes and as we grow, we will break those off into additional classes as needed.

Please keep your eyes peeled for updated class enrolments and if you are wanting to grab a spot for your child, please complete an enrolment form so we can secure those numbers, otherwise we aren’t able to see exact numbers.

Thank you for your patience in our rocky start to kicking things off, but moving forward we are expecting nothing but fine sailing 😉
