Mainland Volleyball Tournament – A Strong Showing in Christchurch, written by manager Nigel Hunter

Thirty-eight schools from across the South Island competed in the boys’ grade at this year’s Mainland Volleyball Tournament in Christchurch. It was a high-quality and fiercely contested event, providing outstanding preparation ahead of Nationals later this term.

The team brought together a great blend of experienced Year 13 leadership and exciting emerging talent from Years 12 and 11. This balance was evident throughout the tournament as the boys combined composure with energy and flair.

After qualifying second in their pool, the team progressed to face Shirley Boys' High School in what proved to be one of the matches of the tournament. In a gripping five-set battle, our boys pushed Shirley all the way before narrowly going down 15–13 in the deciding set. It was a performance full of resilience and skill, and with Shirley going on to place third overall, it underlined the quality of the contest.

Two further matches followed. Against Christ's College, valuable court time was given to our younger players. They rose to the challenge superbly, embracing the opportunity and gaining important experience against strong opposition. That result set up a final 7th/8th playoff against King's High School.

In fitting fashion, the final match was another thriller. Once again going the distance, the boys held their nerve to claim a 15–13 win in the final set. Across the tournament, every member of the squad stepped up in pressure moments, demonstrating outstanding individual skill and, just as importantly, genuine teamwork.

Special mention must go to captain William Cameron, whose leadership was exemplary. He consistently ensured the team remained focused, composed, and united, drawing the best out of those around him.

Beyond results, the tournament marked an important step forward for the group. The team culture continues to strengthen, with senior players investing in the growth of the younger boys, and the younger players responding with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. It was clear that all members of the squad valued both the experience and one another’s contribution.

The boys should be proud not only of their 7th placing in a 38-school competition, but of the standards they set for effort, culture, and commitment. With Nationals on the horizon, this tournament has provided both confidence and momentum for the rest of the season.
