Meet Paula 👋
We’re so excited to welcome Paula to The Physio Barn team!
With 20 years of experience as a physiotherapist, Paula brings a wealth of knowledge and a real passion for helping people stay active and doing the things they love.
When she’s not helping others move better, you’ll find Paula outdoors, running and competing in long-distance events through the hills and trails, or supporting her kids in their sporting adventures.
Paula will be working at The Physio Barn on Tuesdays and Thursdays so we will be open 5 days a week, starting Tuesday 8th September.
We’re thrilled to have her joining us and can’t wait for you to meet her! 💙

Be honest… how often are you stretching or rolling out the same spot??

Age alone should not be the determining factor in whether someone is considered for a joint replacement.
The decision should be based on how much pain someone is experiencing, how significantly their function is affected, and the impact their joint condition is having on their overall quality of life.
Younger patients can actually do exceptionally well following joint replacement. They often experience significant improvements in day to day function and quality of life, and their high levels of motivation can make them particularly engaged with rehabilitation and recovery.
Something that also isn’t talked about enough is the potential downside of waiting too long.
Living with pain and reduced function for years can lead to significant deconditioning, muscle loss, altered movement patterns and compensatory strategies. Gait changes can become established, and other joints and muscles may be affected as the body adapts to protect the painful joint.
By the time someone finally has surgery, they may not simply be recovering from the joint replacement, they’re also having to rebuild strength, mobility and movement patterns that have been lost or altered over time.
The goal shouldn’t be to delay surgery simply because someone is “too young.” It should be about making an individualised decision based on pain, function, quality of life, overall health, expectations and the potential benefits of surgery.
Sometimes, waiting is appropriate. But sometimes, waiting too long can make the road to recovery considerably harder.
