Day 8, 1 deer seen (and spooked) through 6 hunters efforts. Then this whitetail walks into my camp, pretty much shot from the hammock with the GoPro still rolling from a vlog. A stroke of luck to get the boys on the board - finally some venison to go with our fish. A short hike to the coast afterwards had me catching blue cod out of a tree, the hand line was firing! Fillet steak entre with panko crumbed cod fillets for dinner.

This was one of my favourite days I've ever had in the bush, it's definitely the best day I've had in Stewart Island. The video from this day is up on our YouTube channel.
Shoutout to for hooking us up with the . Wicked way to spend a night in such an incredible place. There'll be more hammock camping trips next summer that's for sure.

Next up is Mitch's solo night hammock camping on an isolated headland in Stewart Island. He got dropped off with a handline and a rifle, sourcing his food from the coastline. It ended up being an action packed day with some crazy luck caught on camera.

Episode set for release on our YouTube channel tomorrow night at 6pm.

DISCLAIMER: Scallops were harvested in season, this is a hobby for us so is a delay between filming and posting content 🤙

The boys got it done on the tops - the Stewart Island grey ghost hunted up in the open country, you beauty!

The first week of our hunt in Port Pegasus was unreal with Jono bagging his first white-tailed deer despite the hunting proving difficult. The ocean provided with scallops, crayfish and blue cod on tap. We were well and truly living the dream down there, an outdoorsmans paradise.

Did we mention how cool the Tin Range is? Can’t think of many other places you’d find a kiwi walking round the open tops!

Not sure if this helps advertise our Tin Range video or not...

Tin Range traverse ✅

For such a low lying string of peaks the Tin Range punches above its weight on adventure. This place gets absolutely hammered by the elements. We went on a relatively 'alright' forecast and spent 2 days in the clouds, sideways rain and gale westerly winds.

The trail along the range is marked by the odd upturned rock and plenty of knee high sticks stuck into the ground. They look awfully similar to the scrub that litters the range, completely halting any progress if you lose your way. Pair that with 10 meters of visibility in the clag, rolling boggy tops and a pair of unreliable GPS's and you've got the perfect recipe for losing you way.

The weather cleared for us when it mattered, opening up the views of Port Pegasus and the huge granite domes that punch out from the thick bush - like a scene straight out of king kong. We even managed to track down a grey ghost through a break in the clouds.

Catch our full adventure and route guide over on our YouTube channel if you haven't already. We end the episode reaching the golden shores of Port Pegasus, ready to join the lads for 10 days of hunting, fishing and spearfishing. Episode 2 covers the first half of the action, releasing next Monday night.

New hunting adventure episode up on our YouTube channel

Photos from South Island Rifle Walkers's post 16/08/2026

First up in our Stewart Island series is a traverse of the Tin Range. This scrubby, muddy, windy and claggy mountain range cuts a line down the middle of Rakiura straight to Port Pegasus.

Mitch and Raddy took the long way south filming a route guide across the range whilst trying to bring our tops hunting experience to the Island. We're sick of spooking whitetail in the bush...

Catch the adventure in tomorrow nights episode, set for release on our YouTube at 6pm.
