The next Ryan Fox could be lost to short-term thinking – Michael Glading 23/07/2026

New Zealand Open Tournament Director and NZ PGA Board Member Michael Glading has spoken out about the important role that public, affordable golf courses play in allowing this country to punch above its weight on the world stage.

The next Ryan Fox could be lost to short-term thinking – Michael Glading OPINION: Dame Lydia Ko, Michael Campbell and Sir Bob Charles shared similar starts to Fox.

We’d like to think Ryan Fox’s visit to Takapuna Golf Course earlier this year had something to do with it… 😉⛳

A huge congratulations to Ryan on winning his first major championship — an incredible achievement and a proud moment for New Zealand golf.

Ryan has always been a great supporter of Takapuna Golf, and it was fantastic to welcome him here earlier this year.

But seriously, his victory is a reminder of what New Zealand golf can achieve — and why places like Takapuna matter.

Takapuna provides an affordable and welcoming place where juniors, beginners and everyday golfers can discover, enjoy and develop their game.

If we want to inspire and develop future generations of golfers, we need to ensure public golf courses like Takapuna continue to exist and thrive.

We sincerely congratulate you and deeply admire everything you have done to put New Zealand golf on the world stage. Congratulations from all of us!🏆

🚗 Parking changes at AF Thomas Park

A reminder that a 3-hour parking limit now applies in the sealed carpark at AF Thomas Park between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Golfers who require longer parking can collect a dated permit from the Pro Shop before heading out onto the course.

If you have any questions, please speak to the Pro Shop team.

Winter netball is back, which means our shared parking areas are especially busy on weekends and after school on weekdays.

If you’re heading to the course, we recommend carpooling or getting dropped off where possible. If you do need to park, please allow plenty of extra time before your tee-off and be patient and courteous towards other park users.

Thanks for helping keep things running smoothly for everyone enjoying our fantastic local sports facilities this winter ⛳

Takapuna Golf Course will be closed tomorrow, along with all Auckland sports grounds, due to Cyclone Vaianu.

Our priority is the safety of our staff, players and wider community. Please take care, stay vigilant, and follow all guidance from Civil Defence during this time.

We’ll keep you updated as the situation develops and look forward to welcoming everyone back when it’s safe to do so.

We’re pleased the Kaipātiki Local Board has confirmed that AF Thomas Park will remain the home of public golf at Takapuna.

They have made a commitment to an affordable, accessible and commercially sustainable golf offering, and a minimum allocation of 18 hectares (excluding car parking and buffer zones).

There’s still more work to do to shape exactly what this looks like. We look forward to working with council staff to negotiate a new lease and being part of creating the park’s future master plan.

A big thank you to our local residents and golfing community — your submissions made a real difference and showed just how important this space is to the North Shore.
And thanks to TVNZ for covering this important issue.

Tomorrow is decision day for Takapuna Golf Course

Tomorrow, the Kaipātiki Local Board will make an important decision about the future of golf at Takapuna.
The meeting is open to the public, and we’d love to have our supporters in the room to show just how much this course means to our community.
If you’re able to attend, your presence matters. A strong, visible turnout helps demonstrate the value of keeping golf at AF Thomas Park.
We do ask that all supporters respect the Board’s process. Please be courteous, patient, and mindful that elected members are making a considered decision for the wider community.
Let’s show up in a way that reflects the best of our golfing community — passionate, constructive, and respectful.
Meeting details:
🕙 Time: 10am
📍 Location: Kaipātiki Local Board Office, Glenfield Library Building, 90 Bentley Ave, Glenfield

Our proposal for a 12-hole course is about ensuring we keep affordable, accessible golf at Takapuna if flood mitigation goes ahead at AF Thomas Park.

It draws on successful models in the United States and Australia, where shorter, more flexible courses are increasingly used to increase access, reduce land required, and ensure financial sustainability.

We think a 12-hole course will allow us more flexibility than nine to provide different game configurations to suit everyone. We can set up a booking system so our golfers can play six, nine, 12 and even 18 holes on some days. Some of our beginners, working people and older players want to play a shorter game or a shorter half round before or after work / school etc.

We wanted our golfing community to be among the first to see this.

We are working on a new proposal for the future of Takapuna Golf Course — one that keeps golf alive and thriving at A.F. Thomas Park.

With flood mitigation plans likely to reshape parts of the course, we’ve been exploring what comes next. Instead of simply losing holes, this idea reimagines the future of golf on the North Shore.

⛳ A purpose-designed 12-hole urban course
⛳ Inspired by modern, international trends
⛳ Focused on keeping the game affordable and accessible
