Large, city-wide festival in Münster during the 24th Volksbank Münster Marathon

A total of 12,456 runners are now registered for the major running event on September 13th in Münster. While the "magic" number of 4,000 runners for the 42.195 kilometers was almost reached last year, the organizers are now aiming for 4,500. DZ Hyp is also celebrating another record: the DZ Hyp Student Cup, a special ranking within the marathon, has now reached 893 students. From the absolute world elite to running novices aiming to complete the H+B technics Health Run for the first time, this event caters to all levels. There are suitable distances for every runner. Spectators are also well catered for: the organizing team of Münster-Marathon e.V., with its Ludger Fliß Fan Project, is promoting so-called "fan miles" along the course. A group of at least five participants who briefly register as a fan mile and implement a fun idea along the route to cheer on the runners can win up to €500 in the competition for the best fan miles.

The race promises excitement once again, as breaking the men's course record this year is within reach. This is primarily due to the efforts of Simion Ewar Kameto from Kenya and Ignacio Francisco Erario Nunez from Argentina. The Argentinian also aims to break the Argentinian national record. Among the women, Lisa Huwatscheck from Hanover is in the mix at the top of the field. She's the first elite runner from Germany to compete in the Volksbank Münster Marathon. Two years ago, she was ranked eighth among German marathon runners with her outstanding time of 2:33:23 at the Berlin Marathon.

Lisa is also a top contender in the special ranking for the fastest German runner, which includes the prize sponsored by the Atlantic Hotel Münster. Jana Kappenberg from LSF Münster, who finished second last year, aims to repeat her success. The men's race promises to be exciting: Manuel Kruse from the Running Crew has been the fastest German runner for the second year running. Will he achieve a hat trick in his tenth Münster Marathon? He'll face serious competition from Sascha van Staa from Schwerte, and Marco Griese from Hemer is also in the mix for the title of fastest German.

Prominent figures will be present at the Wecker 28km run: Hendrik Pfeiffer, with a time of 2:06:46, one of Germany's fastest elite runners, is using this race to prepare for a later autumn marathon. His wife Esther, along with her husband, Lisa Huwatscheck, Jana Kappenberg, and marathon novice Gerd Bröskamp, ​​will participate in a panel discussion on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Atlantic Hotel. This interesting exchange will be moderated by Berthold Mertes from Trier and Michael Brinkmann. A major disaster has struck Nepal. Hundreds of people including children are missing, many are dead and communities have been devastated after sudden flash floods that struckNepal’s Rasuwa district, as well as parts of Tibet. The flooding, caused by a surge of water entering the Bhote Koshi River from Tibet, swept through villages with little warning.

Families have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods in a matter of hours. Many people have been forced from their homes and are facing an uncertain future as search and rescue efforts continue.

With communications disrupted, the full scale of the disaster is still emerging and the number of people affected is expected to rise.

The priority now is saving lives and providing urgent aid. As this emergency unfolds, early action will be vital to ensure people receive the support they urgently need.

As a valued member of AIMS, you know the importance of community and helping others in times of crisis.

The Red Cross has launched an emergency disaster appeal. Their first priority is always saving lives and the Nepal Red Cross Society emergency teams have responded immediately to the flooding and are on the ground now, helping with search and rescue efforts and providing aid and support to those affected.

— Providing first aid kits, blankets, ropes and other emergency items

The Nepal Red Cross Society is Nepal's largest humanitarian organisation, with branches in all 77 districts and a nationwide network of more than 127,000 volunteers. It supports communities affected by disasters, health emergencies and other crises through emergency response, health services, blood programmes and community resilience initiatives across the country.

World Record

Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha regained the world half marathon record*, running 56:51 at the Media Maratón Ciudad de Buenos Aires, a World Athletics Label road race, in the Argentinean capital on Sunday (23).
With that performance, Kejelcha took 29 seconds off the world record of 57:20* set by Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon in March – a mark that is pending ratification – to regain a world record he set in Valencia in October 2024 with a 57:30 clocking.
Kiplimo had clocked 56:42 in Barcelona last year, but it could not be ratified as a world record because the race conditions were not fully compliant with World Athletics rules.
The women's race in Buenos Aires was won by Ethiopia’s Fotyen Tesfay who became an overwhelming victor thanks to a 1:03:57 performance.

New York Road Runners Announces 2026 TCS New York City Marathon Professional Athlete Field Featuring Defending Champions, Global Medallist’s, and National Record Holders

New York, August 19, 2026 – New York Road Runners (NYRR), the nonprofit that “runs” New York City producing 60 annual adult and youth races and providing free youth and community programming, has unveiled the professional athlete field for the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, the best day of the year, in the best city in the world. The lineup features 3 defending champions, 40 Olympians and Paralympians, 25 Olympic, Paralympic, and World Championships medallist’s, and 22 national record holders.

Taking place Sunday, Nov. 1, this year’s TCS New York City Marathon will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic 5-boro course, which was first run in 1976 to celebrate the nation’s Bicentennial and uplift the city. Setting the standard for the modern urban marathon, the TCS New York City Marathon has grown into one of the most inclusive and accessible sporting events in the world, bringing together nearly 60,000 participants and more than 2 million spectators to experience the transformative power of running every first Sunday of November. Last year’s race set an event record—for the second consecutive year—with 59,219 finishers, which at the time was the largest marathon in world history. To honour the legacy of the 5-boro New York City Marathon and mark the 50th anniversary of the landmark 1976 race, which was the first to feature a professional athlete field, New York Road Runners is welcoming past champions to participate in race-week festivities, including 1976 New York City Marathon men’s champion Bill Rodgers and Danielle Mika Nagel, daughter of 1976 women’s champion Miki Gorman. Rodgers holds the record for the most victories in the men’s open division, while Gorman’s back-to-back titles in 1976 and 1977 made her the last American woman to win the open division until Shalane Flanagan’s historic victory in 2017.

Defending champions Hellen Obiri of Kenya, Benson Kipruto of Kenya, and Marcel Hug of Switzerland will return to headline the women’s open division and men’s open and wheelchair divisions. Last November, Obiri made history, breaking the 22-year-old course record enroute to capturing her second TCS New York City Marathon title. Her compatriot Kipruto made a stunning TCS New York City Marathon debut, winning the men’s open division by less than one second in the closest men’s race in event history. Hug extended his record with a seventh TCS New York City Marathon title and completed his 15th event, making him a New York Road Runners Streaker.

Along with Obiri, the women’s open division will feature several of the world’s best runners, including 2024 TCS New York City Marathon champion Sheila Chepkirui, three-time Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, and 2025 World Athletics Championships marathon bronze medalist Julia Paternain. In one of the most impressive American fields ever assembled, half marathon record holder Weini Kelati will make her highly anticipated marathon debut. She will be joined by fellow American stars Annie Frisbie, Jess McClain, and Fiona O’Keeffe.

The afternoon of the last day of 2026 is reserved for the Amadora São Silvestre Race. The streets of Amadora will host, on December 31st, the initiative promoted by the Amadora City Hall, with the 10 km race and the children's race. “The São Silvestre da Amadora is a symbol of our city and a benchmark for national athletics. For over five decades, it has established Amadora as a territory of excellence in promoting sport and healthy lifestyles. We invite everyone to join this great celebration of sport and say goodbye to 2026 in our city,” emphasizes Vitor Ferreira, Mayor of Amadora.

51st EDITION
The oldest São Silvestre race in mainland Portugal promises to bring a lot of excitement and always add a special touch to the city of Amadora. Maintaining the tradition of recent editions, the race shirt will have a specific illustration, thus maintaining the connection with the Amadores BD Comics Festival, a city landmark. Last year, the São Silvestre da Amadora race set a record for entries with 3,300 athletes, a number that the organization aims to surpass in its 51st edition.

On December 31st, at 6 PM, the 10 km race will begin, for athletes aged 18 and over, starting on Estrada dos Salgados (next to the Amadora Este metro station), passing through the main streets of the city of Amadora and the mythical Comandos climb; and culminating in the celebration of all athletes at Praça São Silvestre.

This year, the organization has opted for a restructuring of the cash prizes and their respective values: the top ten male and female finishers will be awarded prizes, based on the overall classification; the winner of the 10 km will receive R$ 2,000, the second-place finisher R$ 1,300, and the third-place finisher R$ 950. All athletes who complete the race will receive a medal. The promotional period (€12) runs until September 15th, registrations are made exclusively on the event's official website: saosilvestredaamadora.pt.

The São Silvestre da Amadora race starts with younger participants at 4 PM; encouraging physical activity is the main purpose of the Children's Race:

Bambis (born between 2020 and 2021) - Approximately 300 meters

Benjamins A (born between 2017 and 2019) - Approximately 500 meters

Benjamins B (born between 2015 and 2016) - Approximately 700 meters

Infantil (born between 2013 and 2014) - Approximately 1,000 meters

The traditional parade of classic cars and motorcycles along the 10 km route is also maintained and will begin at 5:05 PM. After its debut in 2025, the organization, in partnership with the São Paulo Athletics Federation, is once again promoting preparatory training for the event.

SÃO SILVESTRE CHAMPIONSHIP
The Amadora São Silvestre is part of the São Silvestre Championship, promoted by HMS Sports and created specifically for those who participate in the Lidl São Silvestre in Lisbon (December 27) and the oldest São Silvestre in mainland Portugal (December 31). Those who complete both races will have access to an exclusive ranking, based on the sum of the times achieved in each event, and to the São Silvestre Championship diploma.
AN EVENT WITH HISTORY

In 1975, the Amadora São Silvestre debuted, in a race won by Carlos Lopes. Throughout its history, the race has brought important names in athletics and eternal champions to Amadora, such as Rosa Mota, António Leitão, Aurora Cunha, Manuela Machado, Fernanda Ribeiro, Domingos Castro, Albertina Machado, and Rui Silva. In 2025, Alexandre Figueiredo (Sport Lisboa e Benfica) and Laura Taborda (SC Braga) were the winners.

Marathon and Half Marathon Sold Out
Registrations to Surpass 2025 Event

(Victoria, B.C. – August 13, 2026) With eight weeks to go before the 46th Royal Victoria Marathon, the event has sold out two of its distances – the Marathon and the OUTWAY Half Marathon. Currently 15,345 are registered for all five events, which is 100 less than the total last year, making it on track to surpass last year’s total, and become the largest event in its history.
“Coming off a highly successful 45th event last year with record numbers we are thrilled that our registrations continue to increase, with more marathoners and half marathoners at the start line this year,” said Cathy Noel, RVM Race Director and General Manager. “The popularity of marathons and half marathons is facing an upward trend worldwide, and our event is no exception. We are looking at over 17,000 registrations by race weekend in all events.”

There is a waitlist for the Marathon, and the Half Marathon waitlist is now closed with 500 hopeful runners on it. However, there are still spots available in the Westland Insurance 8K, the Island Savings 5K and the Thrifty Foods Kids Run.

The 45th RVM last year created an economic impact of over $14 million which Noel attributes to hosting partners who support the event. “The hospitality industry plays a huge part of our success with hotels, attractions and our transportation partners stepping up to the plate. We also prioritize buying local, working with local suppliers. This creates an all-round memorable experience for our participants, volunteers and the community.”
Race weekend highlights include a sold-out race expo, a pre-race carbo dinner with guest speaker, World Race Walk Champion, Evan Dunfee, and the Island Savings CHEK Charity Cheer Zone featuring a 1 km sprint ‘race’ for all participants with prize money. “This year we are encouraging participants to wear costumes in whichever race they are in as part of the Westland Insurance Costume Contest,” adds Noel.

The Island Savings 5K and the Thrifty Foods Kids Run take place in Oak Bay on Saturday, October 10 with the Marathon, OUTWAY Half Marathon and Westland Insurance 8K on Sunday, October 11, starting and finishing in downtown Victoria. Through the CHEK Charity Pledge Program, the charities are looking to raise $300,000, adding to the $2.35 million the program has raised since 2005.
