5-Marcel Daelmans – ‘Walking system’.

Participants can take part in the activities in small groups and switch between activities and groups.
It is not a rigid program. Length per activity: 15-20 minutes.

About the Hangar Estate:
“The Hangar is an aircraft hangar disguised as a barn.
It is built by the Germans during World War II.
The Hangar and the fields are being transformed into a test site for the arts and nature.
We are investigating whether, and in what way, seemingly opposing interests – culture, nature, landscape, and heritage – can be united by the arts, through learning by doing.”

About Fetishism in Sound:
We are an Arnhem-based sound art collective. Starting in April 2023, we organize monthly gatherings in which the phenomenon of sound is explored in various ways, often interactively. There are lectures, workshops, group activities, opportunities to experiment, performances, exchange of sounds, information, and knowledge.

Op Landgoed de Hangar.

Ooit was Landgoed de Hangar een vliegtuighangar, gebouwd tijdens de Tw**de Wereldoorlog. Door Landgoed de Hangar en het omliggende terrein als agrarisch bedrijfsgebouw en akker te presenteren, probeerde de Duitse bezetter de werkelijke functie te camoufleren.

Deze geschiedenis van verhulling en manipulatie vormt het vertrekpunt van (ON)KRUIDEN. Centraal staat de vraag hoe taal en machtsstructuren onze waarneming beïnvloeden. Wat noemen we “onkruid” en waarom?

Op landgoed de Hangar groeien verschillende inheemse planten ook wel (on)kruiden genoemd. Zoals bij veel (on)kruiden het geval is, beschouwen we het als “onkruid”, omdat het opduikt op plekken waar we ander voedsel willen telen. Veel van deze (on)kruiden zijn echter eetbare, voedzame kruiden met een rijke geschiedenis. In tijden van schaarste,
zoals de Tw**de Wereldoorlog, werden (on)kruiden gegeten als groente of verwerkt in brood.

In vroege culturen hadden vooral vrouwen diepgaande kennis van (on)kruiden, planten die voeden, genazen en beschermden. Hun kennis was geworteld in rituelen, observaties en een diep begrip van aarde en leven.

Het onderzoek (on)kruiden omvat het telen, oogsten en verwerken van onkruiden in een cirkelvormige (on)kruidenbed, waarbij de relatie tussen mens, plant en landschap centraal staat.

Andere werken die voortkomen uit dit onderzoek gaan over de helende en beschermende eigenschappen in de natuur. Een boom draagt de woorden “nature – nurture” — en bevraagd wat aangeboren of aangeleerd is, maar verwijst ook naar de onzichtbare ondergrondse verbindingen waarbij bomen voedingsstoffen delen, waarschuwen voor gevaar en communiceren.

De vergeten (on)kruiden nodigen uit tot herwaardering: van plantenkennis én van een ander soort weten die cyclisch, intuïtief en verbonden is.
Misschien ligt in deze verdrongen wijsheid een tegenkracht besloten, een herinnering aan wat ooit werd vertrapt, maar nog steeds kiemt tussen de voegen van het systeem.

Het project (ON)KRUIDEN gaat over planten, maar misschien nog meer over macht, afkomst, omgeving en de systemen waarvan we deel uitmaken.

At Landgoed de Hangar.

Landgoed de Hangar was once an aircraft hangar, built during the Second World War. By presenting Landgoed de Hangar and the surrounding grounds as an agricultural business building and farmland, the German occupier attempted to camouflage its true function.

This history of concealment and manipulation forms the starting point of (ON)KRUIDEN. Central to the project is the question of how language and power structures influence our perception. What do we call “w**ds” and why?

On the de Hangar estate, various native plants, also known as w**ds or herbs, grow. As is the case with many w**ds, we consider them "w**ds" because they appear in places where we want to grow other food. However, many of these w**ds are edible, nutritious herbs with a rich history. In times of scarcity, such as the Second World War, w**ds were eaten as vegetables or incorporated into bread.

In early cultures, women in particular possessed profound knowledge of w**ds - plants that nourished, healed, and protected. Their knowledge was rooted in rituals, observations, and a deep understanding of the earth and life.

The w**d research involves cultivating, harvesting, and processing w**ds in a circular w**d bed, where the relationship between humans, plants, and landscape takes center stage.

Other works resulting from this research focus on the healing and protective properties found in nature. A tree bears the words “nature – nurture” — and questions what is innate or learned, but also refers to the invisible underground connections through which trees share nutrients, warn of danger, and communicate.

The forgotten (w**ds) invite a re-evaluation: of plant knowledge And of another kind of knowing that is cyclical, intuitive, and connected.
Perhaps a counterforce is contained within this repressed wisdom, a memory of what was once trampled, but still germinates between the cracks of the system.

The (ON)KRUIDEN project is about plants, but perhaps even more about power, origin, environment, and the systems of which we are a part.
