Somebody asked me the other day “what are common mistakes international job seekers in the Netherlands make in their applications”?
There are many common areas where job seekers can improve their applications. Often job seekers who need to make these improvements do not have recent experience applying for jobs or CV’s are written very differently in their home countries. There is so much diverse advice on the internet that sometimes it is hard to know exactly what to do. Here are 5 common areas that often need to be improved;

1. Layout
Poor layout of the CV makes it hard for the reader to scan quickly and may result in them missing important information. This could be because there is too much information squashed into one page and it is not clear and concise. A CV in the Netherlands does not have to be one page only.
2. Tailoring the CV for the Job
It is important to read the job description well and to tailor the CV for the job. Recruiters need to be able to see that you match the job and often your CV has to pass through an automated applicant tracking system that is matching the keywords.
3. Permission to work
Do not leave out nationality and work permit status on your CV when you are entitled to work in the Netherlands. If you do this, the recruiter might guess wrongly where you are from and might guess wrongly that you do not have a work permit. In most cases they will not phone you to find out and if they are not willing to sponsor, they may reject your application.
4. Cover letter/motivation letter or email.
Even if you are not asked for one, include it in the body of your email or attach it to the end of your CV. You can only enhance your application and you have nothing to lose. I recently asked various international company recruiters in the Netherlands if they still find these letters important and they all said yes.
5. Technical knowledge – if relevant to your profession
Do not leave out technical related experience when you do have it – the world of work is changing and so any technical knowledge that you have will help the company to know that you can adapt to new technologies. You do not have to be a programmer. Any experience you have is an advantage therefore if you have used known software packages mention them and if they are not well known you can mention that you have used bespoke in-house software packages, if true. If you have no experience, do a course if relevant to your profession.

These are just a few common areas that often need improvement. If you are applying for jobs but struggling to get an interview, do consider investing in a coach to help because the job market in the Netherlands is very competitive especially now. If you have a little more time at the moment, why not invest some of it in updating your CV and LinkedIn profile!
Request recommendations for your LinkedIn from previous roles.
Have you listed all your responsibilities and updated courses completed?
Has your job changed since you updated your CV last? Then now is a good time to add these changes to your Master CV.
Regular updates will help you to be more prepared when it comes to applying for your next role whether it is internal or external.

Are you currently job seeking?

Looking for a job can be time-consuming and hard work but if you are willing to put the time and effort in, you will find it very rewarding.

Networking accounts for a very high success rate and if you meet “natural networkers” and tell them that you are looking for a job, they will try to think about how they can help and who they can introduce you to if you have made a good impression. Before you start networking practice articulating what your skills are and what position you are looking for. Sometimes in the process of looking for a job, you can make long-lasting useful professional connections

For many job positions, there is a very competitive job market in the Netherlands so it is important to be able to articulate your skills and match them for the position you are applying for both on paper and verbally. Most people find this part very challenging until they get into the right mindset and then it becomes easier.

Whilst you are looking if you have the time do a course. For example, learning Dutch will be very useful even if you are just at a beginner level. The Dutch like it very much to see you are making an effort to learn their language and it can help you to understand more what is going on around you when you are outside the workplace with your colleagues.

Every step forward is a learning experience. If you need to invest in a coach and you find the right one that matches your needs, the investment of time and money will be worth it well into the future.
